Should I mention peripheral connections to school?

My mother was a grad student (got a PhD) at one school I am applying to, another was a staff member at a different school, and my grandfather is affiliated with the medical school of one school. Can I mention these in my essay to show a history of interest in the school?

Maybe in passing in the “why us” essay but usually there is a spot to indicate legacy status or if you have family on staff.

Yes,I meant the “why us” essay. For example, my parents met when my mother was in grad school at this school, but they moved away after that. But it is still a part of our family lore and I love the school.

There are some schools that have alumni legacy programs check the Alumni Association. When you fill out the Common App and Coalition App it asks for parent education and that is where you will note your mother received her PhD from the university to which you are applying. This is also where it asks if either of your parents work for that university. There is no place for former employees to be noted. UMiami considers grandchildren legacies and you can fill out a form listing the grandparent, degree and year of graduation. I wouldn’t mention these connections in an essay unless it strongly relates to your essay topic.

Thanks, that is very helpful.
