I intended for the past year to major in a social science or humanities because it was simply what I enjoyed and I was good at it. However, I can’t shake the desire to pursue medicine as I feel it’d be more rewarding in the long run. I am a senior in high school and I have not taken a science this year because I felt it was too competitive and time-consuming as I also worked 12 hours/week along with extra-curriculars. I know I have a bit of “Imposter’s Syndrome” so I’m not sure if I could succeed as a pre-med at UCLA or not.
Here are my AP stats:
Sophomore:
Biology - 4
Junior:
English Language - 5
Psychology - 5
US History - 4
Senior (my presumption):
English Literature - 5
Studio Art - 4
Calculus AB - 4/5
Government - 4/5
Macroecon - probably pass lol
Microecon - 4/5
German Language - 2 (lol)
Is it possible for me? I did get an A in Chem Honors my Junior year, but it was a joke class honestly.
I feel as though I’ve already been “weeded out” by not taking Chem AP, Physics AP, or Calc BC.
You can major in anything and still be pre-med. You just have to take a core of science classes and then the MCAT. Don’t be deterred based on school so far. This is not Europe after all and you are free to change you mind at any time.
That’s interesting. I hadn’t thought about majoring in a humanities while also fulfilling pre-med requirements, but apparently it’s not too uncommon.
If you haven’t spent time working or volunteering in a health-care setting then this is just a guess. Guesses are fine as starting points, but before you start signing up for 2 years of math and science it would be a smart idea to get some first-hand experience to see if it really feels right for you. On the other hand, if you have done this and feel confident a career in medicine is right for you, then don’t narrow it down too quickly. Spend a few hours browsing on http://explorehealthcareers.org
