I am going to be majoring in electrical engineering and I know I need to have an excellent math foundation to succeed. I got a 5 on the AP Calc AB exam, which would give me credit for calc 1 and put me in calc 2. However, I am unsure whether retaking it would be beneficial because, I got a 5, so on paper it seems I know it well, but the content in the class wasn't that easy for me so maybe I don't know it that well.

I would go on to calc 2. Your 5 shows that you have a decently strong grasp of the mathematical concept in that course and you need to save that credit time for other classes you should take as an engineer. If you feel you are not ready for calc 2, study calc 1 over the summer by yourself until you feel like you understand the subject. There is no reason you should be in a class where you have already learned the material, but you need to relearn it at a faster pace with difficult exams.

My son skipped 115 and went straight to 116 after scoring a 5 on AP Calc AB. He said the class was hard, but he was happy because both 115 and 116 are weed out classes meaning it is difficult to do well in either class. That is, getting a 5 on the test will not make 115 an easy A.

skipping or not, it all comes down to how well you’re able to grasp the material and compete with your peers. You have some advantage right now, so if you’re not too at math(the 5 doesn’t mean much, imo), I advise you stay in 115. If you learn pretty well, by all means, take 116.

I had a friend who did pretty well, she had a 4 on it i think. We both thought that 115 was going to be an easy A, but she ended up getting pwned on the exams because shes not that good in calc.

I would go to calc 2 since you did get a 5

WAIT! Did you take calc senior year? If yes, how did you get your AP score?!

Sorry, it’s just that I’ve been camping out at my mailbox waiting for mine…

i called the number in the ap booklet and the machine reads off the scores, it cost 8 dollars though

Skip to Calc 2, but take Math 156 instead. Useful for engineers.

Ohh dang, collegeboard are such scammers. I hope they mail it soon, I can’t afford to pay $8 for something they could easily post for free online…

But to answer your question, if I get a 4 or 5 on the AB (and I’m like 95% sure I got a 5) I’m gonna take calc 2 for sure. so ya.

allin, is MATH 156 a lot harder or does it just explain the content in a different way?

Same content, but with a stress on applications. It’s a lot better than 116, in terms of the curve. Might be a little more homework.
