Should I retake the SAT or the ACT?

I'm a good student, but not a spectacular one, so my standardized test scores have always been insanely important to me, particularly when it comes to applying to college. I go to school in a very stereotypically rural area, and when I first got my scores back a few months ago, I received nothing but praise for them. Now that I've seen the average scores accepted by my favorite universities, I've been grounded. Harshly.

On the SAT, I got a 2210 overall.
Verbal (800)
Math (660)
Writing (730)

SAT II
Literature (790)
U.S. History (760)

ACT (32)

I was thinking of retaking one or more of these, particularly the SAT (to earn a higher math score). Is it worth it?

I would say retake the ACT because fit the SAT your only 200 points off but the ACT your only 4 points off

I would recommend retaking the SAT, since a 2210 is better than a 32, and if you could raise your math score some you could get to a 2250, which is about equal to a 34 ACT.

It depends on…

(1) What you are planning to study - for STEM majors, accounting, finance majors you probably want to up your math score.

(2) What schools you are planning to apply - for selective schools you would need a higher math score.

(3) What your composite scores are for the ACT - if you have a good math composite score and not applying to selective schools, you would probably be fine.

However, I think it wouldn’t hurt to retake if you can even if you are applying to non-selective schools. It can help get you extra scholarship funds for some schools.

Because the ACT composite is an average, it’s easier to raise your SAT score.

Alright! Thanks, guys. The only reason I was hesitant is because I doubt I could ever score an 800 again, but I’ll look into it. :)

@ognopgod - I’m planning on going into business, so I suppose it’s kind of in the middle there.

I would say go for the one that more comfortable with, the one that you think you’ll score higher on. Most people either prefer one or the other based on their learning styles. With that said, I also agree with the other posters - our SAT score is better, so if you think you can improve on the math, go for it! No harm in trying ;)
