My composite score was 2110, and it breaks down to: 740 for reading, 710 for math, and 660 for writing. This was the second time I took it (improved from 2080), and I am planning on applying to University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, Stanford, Yale, Brown, Columbia, USC, and UChicago. If it changes anything, I got 34 on my ACT. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I think your score is good. It’s difficult to improve the score any more than you already have, unless you’re willing to devote significant amounts of time and effort to doing so.

I’d recommend retaking it simply because writing was your worst score and IMO it’s the easiest to improve.
Get a PR book and just study writing for 2 weeks and you should easily be able to score 750+ given your other excellent scores.

There are some good tips on this site for getting a high score on your essay if that will help

It is likely that you can further improve your SAT, but a 34 ACT is equivalent to an SAT score approximately 150-180 points above your current SAT composite. It’s unlikely you will exceed your ACT performance in time for the 2014 application deadlines, even with concerted study.

Remember that some of the schools on your list will require 2 subject tests if you apply using the SAT. If you haven’t taken the necessary subject tests yet, you will have to consider whether you even have time to both retake the SAT and do the subject tests.

If that ACT score is an ACT Plus Writing score, it is almost certainly going to be the stronger way for you to apply.

Finally, I hope you have a few safeties in mind. If this is your full list of intended applications, it’s extremely reach-heavy. USC is the least selective of the bunch, but I wouldn’t call 19% throwing the campus gates open.

Thank you everyone! In SAT subject tests, I have received 750 in Math II and 800 in World History. I retook Math II and took U.S. History and will get the results this Thursday. Should I take more subject tests? People on College Confidential told me that the colleges only look at the top two SAT II scores…

Why are you not just submitting your ACT score? Don’t all your schools accept it? Even if they do want 2 SAT II’s in addition to the ACT (Williams requires this though most don’t, IDK about your colleges), you have 2 excellent scores already and maybe more. I don’t get why you aren’t just going with the ACT. I’m sure you have much better uses of your time right now than studying for a 3rd attempt at the SAT when you have a 34 ACT…

If you are planning to submit the SAT anyway, remember that many selective schools pay much closer attention to the CR + M score and don’t give as much (if any) weight to WR. Your CR + M is 1450 which is much stronger than the 2110.
