This may not be the right forum for this topic. I apologize in advance.
I missed an exam due to vomiting and diaharrea. I got a doctor’s note and an ambulatory referral to the gastrologist a few days prior. I didn’t go because of financial issues. I went to the ER a few months back and am down by ~$5.5k. They want to stick a tube in me for $1.2k. I’m sorting things out with my insurance and am on medication.
I missed a few weeks worth of classes. I missed 2 exams. One professor saw my doctor’s note and was fine with that. The other won’t accept my note or ambulatory referral. I also emailed them ahead of time, albeit it was hours before as I was really hoping the meds would help me out sooner.
Should I ask the dean for advice with this issue? I perhaps I could get a medical leave for the semester. I don’t want to out or blast the professor, I just want to see my options when it comes to this issue. I’ve never had an extreme medical issue like this before.
P.S. Give me whatever advice you can give me. I need it. Don’t want to go into debt with a withdrawal.
For something like this it’s best you talk to the dean so you can sort it out. Especially if the professor wasn’t receptive.
Sounds like a jerk professor.
Definitely talk to the Dean or if you have an advisor. Perhaps you can take an incomplete in those classes (or really the one class) and repeat it the following semester.
You might see if you can take something in the summer to avoid getting too out of sync with the classes. Sometimes, you can take a required class at a different school in summer and transfer it to your main school.
You had no health insurance? Not through your parents or ACA? Or though the college?
yes, the dean wants to see you succeed, and can help cut you some slack
My daughter had the flu in Jan. She went to the campus health center because she thought she had strep throat. Before she even got home, the dean had sent an email to all her professors. They didn’t want her in class but one professor did ask when she’d turn in the assignment.
Do ask the dean for help, but have a plan too. How and when will you make up classes, labs, and tests? Missing 2 weeks of classes is a lot.
