Should I still apply? Bad test scores.

SSAT: 45th percentile
TOEFL ibt: 94 (I know most schools are looking for a 100)
Some people say that if you have good extracurriculars, essays, recommendations and interviews, you should still apply.
But what do you think?

where are you planning to apply?

Depends on where you’re planning to apply. I’m guessing you’ve already done your interviews and everything along with the application fee! (I REALLY HOPE SO.) It’s really late in the game. You only have a range of 2-15 days left so get it done fast! Don’t want to be stressing about essays at the last minute.

Agreed, depends where you are applying

@bianca,

For the very highly selective schools you mentioned in another of your threads, your SSAT scores are problematic. That’s not to say that it’s impossible for you to be admitted to the schools on your list—who knows what can happen—but it will be an uphill climb with test scores far below the school’s average, without some extenuating circumstance that the school could attribute it to (e.g., if you are coming from a low socio-economic background or if your primary language of educational instruction is not English).

Only you and your family can answer your question. Here are some things you should think about to help you make that decision:

What motivated you to pursue BS in the first place? Are those reasons still important to you?

What is your objective in going to BS?
• Better educational opportunity?
 • Better extracurricular opportunity?
 • Prestige?
 • English language education?
 • Experience American culture?

How urgent is it that you matriculate this fall?

Do you have a good fall-back option if you are not accepted by any of the schools to which you apply?

What other factors are critical?
• Financial Aid?
 • Geography? Location close to your cousin?

What will you do if you are not accepted by any schools-- will you look at schools w rolling admissions?

Maybe a more constructive question than “Should I still apply”, is:
“What other schools should I also apply to?”

Are the schools on your list the only ones that can satisfactorily meet your objectives? Would it be more desirable on March-10 to be trying to make a decision on which offer of admission to accept, or to be scrambling for other alternatives?
