Should I take a year off?

Hi everyone. I have been thinking about doing medical school ever since high school. I volunteered in the hospital a ton and did an ISEF winning medical science fair project back then. I decided to keep all my doors open by majoring in chemical engineering and biochemistry at a pretty good private school. I have a decent GPA at 3.7. Currently I am doing research on the human estrogen recptor protein. During my summers I've been interning at a large biomedical company in Boston. I do volunteer work during the school year, but it isn't really related to medicine--I go around and do chemistry shows for little kids among other things. Because I haven't done that much in the hospital lately, I was wondering if I should take a year off and get that part of my resume up before I seriously apply to any medical schools? I think I'll still apply next fall but if I don't get into any good schools I might wait out a year.

Thanks for the help.

wow. personally i think u have great application as it is. taking a year off seems to be really hot these days. suddenly ppl all around me r either taking an year off or advising me to do so. why, i don't really know. i say take a year off if u really want to. but make sure u spend that time productively. don't use it as a vacation. it's so easy to slack off and take it easy when u take a year off. but that will only make ur application look worse. if u take a year off, make sure u spend that time wisely.
