Hello,
I will be a freshman student in LTSC in Fall 2013. I would like to go into human or veterinary medicine. Today, I registered for classes at orientation. I have a few questions about the courses I may be taking. I am trying to become a biological sciences major. I have biology credit from Stevenson University that gets me out of BSCI105, but I am waiting for my AP Biology score. If I get a 5, I can get out of BSCI105 & 106. I am currently signed up for 106. It looks like I need CHEM 131/132 and CHEM 231/232 to get into the biology major. I completed the english req. using AP credit. I was just confused today as to whether I should sign up for CHEM 131/132 in addition to the biology class. Do you think that would be too difficult? If I am planning to apply to medical or veterinary school, would it be better to get a higher GPA by saving the chem classes for my spring semester? This would lighten the load, and I would be able to get some of the gen ed req. out of the way in the fall since I wouldn't be in chem. On the other hand, if I took chem in the fall, I could take chem 231/232 in the spring. This would mean I would be able to declare the biology major sooner. I would also be "ahead of the game" I guess since I would be able to go into more advance classes my sophomore year. If I waited, I would have to take chem 231/232 in my sophomore year and wait to declare my major. I guess what I'm asking is, for getting into medical school or veterinary school, would it be better for me to spread out the harder classes and potentially get a higher GPA? Or would it be better to take the harder classes as soon as possible, which would allow me to declare my major sooner and take even more advanced classes and improve my course rigor? Is chem even difficult? Would it be hard to take chem and bio at the same time? Thanks for any and all advice!!!
EDIT: Also, keep in mind, to remain eligible for the bio major, I think I can only retake a required class once.

How were you able to register for Chem and Bio at the same time? Are you signing up for Calculus as well? Sorry, I’m a transfer student who is also in LTSC and I am trying to declare as a Biology major and was unable to sign up for Chem131/132 or BSCI106. However, in the four year plan it says you can take both Chem, Bio, and Calculus concurrently. I would suggest you look at some of the four year plans in which majors you are interested in! They will give you an idea on how to space out your courses and which ones you should have taken by a certain number of credits (benchmarks). Hope at least that helps but I’m curious on how you were able to sign up for those courses! Its been a problem for me unfortunately :

Why has it been a problem for you? Have all the combinations you have tried yielded overlapping times or something? Yeah I’m taking calc as well. Though I don’t know if I should do 140 or 130 since I’m trying to go into bio

No! It’s no problem with over-lapping its the fact that the Registrar has said that I, people, can’t take courses such as BSCI106 or CHEM131/132 without first taking Calculus. Which to me is total bullcrap because 1. even my advisor at Orientation this week told me to take Chemistry this semester along with MATH130 AND in the suggested 4-year plan for biology they have that one should take BSCI106, CHEM131/132 and MATH130 all in the same semester! Something just isn’t in right how can they expect that to happen and if you were able to sign up for all three why is there a block?

I don’t really understand. Are you sure it’s not conflicting with some other class you are taking? I don’t know, sometimes, the course require a special permission from the advisor…perhaps that’s the problem?

On the four year plan, why do they have bio 106 taken before 105??? That’s weird.

See my problem! UGH! I came in with a plan for registering and it was all screwed up. They thought that maybe because my transcript wasn’t updated yet that then I would able to register but I tried again the day after when the grades all the grades were on my transcript (miraculously) and still no luck. It put a bar saying I need a math prerequisite?

I’ve talked to the Registrar they’re telling me that I need to take math before I can do anything. At orientation my advisor told me to take Chem along with Calculus. So who’s right because everyone else seems not to have this problem so far!

As for BSCI106 before BSCI105. Apparently, that’s just the way it is. Initially the school I was supposed to attend even had it in that order. I got AP credit for 105 but not 106. I think maybe in the case for AP maybe they figure you didn’t cover Ecology (because it’s usually covered at the end) but I could be wrong on why that is.

Oh okay. You should be able to sign up for all of those classes at the same time. I think it did give me some kind of error message when I tried to sign up for math130 (since that’s calc for just life science majors), but my advisor went and did something to override it.

That’s what mine did for my MATH130 too because the scores weren’t there yet…I really need to get a hold of someone by monday. I called them and left a message and emailed an nothing!

I’m sure you will get a response on Monday
