I'm going to be a high school senior this year, and I'm retaking the ACT because I was unhappy with my score (27). I want to apply to BU and Northwestern but I only just realized they ask for SAT subject tests. Well, they're not required but they're "recommended". What does that mean? Does it mean I won't get accepted unless I take those tests? Does it depend how high you score on your ACT/SAT? Help!

“recommended” pretty much means it will significantly help your chances. so yes, take at least two if you have time to study. DO NO BLOW THEM OFF.

I agree with risubu. SAT IIs don’t usually make or break prospective students’ chances, but considering the large pool of applicants for the schools you’re applying to, they could seriously help.
I’d take two, maybe three. Just make sure you demonstrate skills across the academic spectrum (math, science, humanities). Good luck! :)
