Should I Take This IB Offer?

Hi guys, I just received an offer from a small boutique IB in NYC as a sophomore for summer. As ecstatic as I am about this, I am worried because I am not 100% sure on IBanking. I kind of am leaning towards Sales/Trading because of hours and it seems more interesting to me. I would be working 9-6:30 plus an hour commute back and forth which is really harsh to me and making between $3-5k. Does this seem worth it? I also don't really have any backup internships...

How are you going to be successful if you aren’t willing to work hard and learn? Here’s a chance for a good resume builder but you’d rather sit home and do nothing? Do you know there are a ton of MBA graduates who willing to work for free to have a chance of gaining experience? Do you know what a stepping stone is?

I can’t believe you actually said this? These are regular working hours, short really, and one hour commute is common place.

I mean, the difference is that I have no other money otherwise and if I’m paying for transportation and stuff, I’ll barely have any spending money for anything. And I was also asking this because I wanted to know if Ibanking has transferrable skills to Trading because that is what I think I might be interested in in the long run.

Ok, so I’m a prof in business, my H is a dean and my D works in S& T (T) at a BB.

So Cornellperson person you need to understand what this profession is about.

–Take the offer. You will learn a lot. You might find you love or hate the job. It’s great for you resume. And network, network.

-Try to get an S&T job next summer. My D had a back office job at Goldman after her soph. yr. She got a front office junior yr.

-Stop whining about the hours. My D, now a derivative trader at a BB has to be at work at 6- 6:30 am to 5 or 6 PM.

Take the offer - if you can’t handle it, you won’t be able to handle IB or S&T full time. Those hours are more than manageable (I know people in S&T, yes, S&T, who work from 7 to between 8 and 10pm, yes, again, S&T).

IB and S&T have very useful and transferable skill sets from one to another. As a soph, this is a great opportunity, but if you don’t want it, then pass and let someone really interested and who understands the value of it, jump right on.

PM me if you have other questions.

IBanker

YES!!! (all I read was the thread title, because that’s all I needed)
