I am currently a freshman at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. I applied for transfer to the College of William and Mary and got in. Only problem is, I'm not sure if I should transfer. My GPA for first semester was 4.0 and i will get a 3.8-4.0 this semester. I am very happy with the quality of education I have received at St. Thomas, I just have not gotten the transformative experience from college that I expected. Part of the problem is that I am from St. Paul, and I don't feel like I am branching out enough. Also, I do worry about the prestige factor of the St. Thomas name. It doesn't carry as much weight as W&M. However, I do know that I will not perform as well at W&M as I am currently doing at UST. So basically my question is, is it worth it to transfer based on prestige and excitement? I would appreciate any advice that can be lent on the topic.

read this…really interesting letter by a current W&M student. little dated, but probably still relevant

scroll down until you see “in closing” in bold and read the letter.

Whether or not you decide to transfer to that specific school, I’d say transfering out of your home town is an excellent choice. I transfered to a small liberal arts school in my home town because I didn’t like the people at the one I was going to in another state, and now I’m even more miserable. I miss the excitement of being on my own, on my own terms, and making friends/doing things without a parent within 500 miles. Now I have a serious mental block, and I’m having serious problems becoming engaged in social and academic life bc I’m back home. Basically, leaving home is an awesome idea. This was more of a rant than a helpful response, but I hoped it helped some, regardless :).

Thank you guys so much for the advice. I also would like to add that UST costs me only $5,000 per year, while W&M would cost me around $15,000 per year. Is the transfer worth paying $45,000 for the next three years rather than $15,000 (not including inflation)?
