Should I Transfer or Not?

I started school at the University at Buffalo about a month ago. The first two weeks I was extremely, extremely homesick - crying everyday, calling home whenever I could. These past two weeks have definitely been better. I still find myself tearing up occasionally, but not everyday, and I think I’m just starting to adjust. However, I still have a nagging that I may have chosen the wrong school.

UB is huge - it’s the largest SUNY - and it’s very STEM focused, with a lot of engineer majors. I’m currently majoring in Speech and Hearing Science, but I love to paint and write, and I feel that those interests are shared by only a small part of the student body. Additionally, I’m six hours away from home, which may not seem that far, but it’s very difficult and expensive to coordinate trips home, and my parents can’t really visit.

I think that if I chose to stay here, I would have a good college experience. I’ve made great friends and joined some clubs I really like. However, if I could go back in time and apply to college again, I would only look at small schools closer to home with a liberal arts leaning, which is basically the opposite of where I am now. I never had a top school last year and there was no place that I fell in love with (I chose Buffalo basically because it was one of the few SUNYs that had my major and it has a reputable name and was located near a city.) I feel like it took actually going someplace to figure out what I want.
I’ve been thinking about SUNY New Paltz because it’s only 40 minutes from home, it has a liberal art, hippie-ish vibe that I like, and it’s located in a cute college town.

So . . . thoughts? Are these good reasons to look into transferring? I know that it’s ultimately my decision, but I just want to hear some outside opinions to help me decide.

Does New Paltz have your major?

Would New Paltz be affordable?

Why don’t you give UB a bit more time? You may find that you are very happy there by the time the semester ends.

Yes, New Paltz has my major and it would definitely be affordable - same tuition as UB minus costs of transportation. Right now I’m planning to stay here at least through the spring and then decide but I’m just thinking ahead.
