Hello Everyone!!

I am caught in a big decision. I want to transfer to Washington DC as I am politics major and think that I will be exposed to many internship opportunities and real life opportunities pertinent to my major in DC. I love Mount Holyoke College a lot and like the student-faculty interactions but I do not know what will be good for me in the long learn. I have been accepted into American University in DC. Mount Holyoke is a very presitigious liberal arts education but in terms of opportunities I would like to be in DC. I would like to know your opinions.

One way to have "the best of both" would be to do summer and/or J-term internships in D.C. Have you explored this option?

I always thought that MoHo was pretty well renowned for its internship opportunities. You really need to get your professors on board and ask them for their honest opinion. They might even have some connections. And there's always Junior year abroad, where you could try politics else where.

But if you're not satisfied with you education, go for it.

My D will be a junior in the fall and got a fantastic funded internship through MHC in Washington DC for this summer...her first choice. While she is there, she is taking a class at AU at night so she can get enough credits towards her minor. (She is an environmental studies major and economics minor, but she started out thinking she would major in international relations.) My impression is that politics is a very strong department at MHC. MH is small and not in a city, but SO international. Don't know if you are thinking of grad school, but if yes you might want to check out Johns Hopkins School of International Studies--one year in Bologna, Italy and one year in Washington. Since you are so happy at MH, I agree with previous posts about really considering all options before transferring... It would be different if you were miserable or if MH did not have so much to offer you.

Thanks for your opinions. I did intern at Boston and will intern in DC this summer. I just still want to stay in DC and experience the opportunities offered during the entire academic year. I sometimes feel depressed in the bitter cold and the area. I was wondering since MHC is very presitigious school will it hurt me in the future if I graduate from American University although the political science department at American University is strong and prestigious? Both the options seems very impressive to me that's why it is hard to make a decision.

Looks like there will be at least three Holyoke women in D.C. this summer! My daughter will be interning there as well.

Any more opinions?

Why do you want to transfer?

I want to transfer mainly because I would love to live in DC. South Hadley is little bit boring for me and the winter is very chilly. MHC does not offer me a good financial aid package which is a major issue as I think I wont be able to afford the education as the loan company from where I used to borrow the money will stop lending. I am caught in deciding whether I will later regret in life for leaving MHC as it is a very prestigious school. Any opinions will highly be appreciated .
