Should I transfer to University of Georgia from University of South Carolina?

Hello All.

I posted to find out if I should transfer to UGA from U of South Carolina, probably during the second half of my sophomore year. I am currently a high school senior, and will be a freshman at USC's honors college.

I personally feel that UGA has a better feel to it, and I feel that it also might have better research opportunities, given it's honors college and large size. Btw, I am pre-med.

Would it be worth it to transfer? Is the process of transferring hard?

I’d suggest that you dive headfirst into USC and treat it as your dream school. You wouldn’t go into a marriage with a plan to divorce in middle age, and I wouldn’t enter into a relationship with a university on a similar basis.

Transferring is not usually hard as long as your grades are solid. But you’re not even there yet, why think about transferring already? If you feel you won’t be happy there, and are sharp enough to get into USC’s honors program, you should be able to go to UGA straight away. I’m not saying UGA is necessarily better than UGA; it depends on you and your chosen field of study. You’ll probably be fine either way, but if you’re going to statrt at USC, give it and yourself a fair chance!

I think you could do really well at South Carolina. There are a few things to consider:

You would be transferring from an honors college to the general student population, so all of the special privileges (small classes, personalized advisement, study abroad grants, etc) would go away.

The biggest determinate to med school acceptance is the GMAT. Where you go to school will probably have little bearing on how you score.

You would be in a much better position to access research opportunities as an honors college student.

Grades at USC would not transfer, so your GPA would be decided exclusively by more difficult, more competitive upper level science classes.

USC and UGA are both SEC schools with big time athletics in great college towns with very proud fan bases. As others have suggested, you should go in full force because you may very well fall in love with the school.

Hey pspguy123. I was a bit shocked when I read your post. I am currently a freshman here at USC and am also premed. I did the same thing as you thinking I wanted to transfer to UGA the second half of my sophomore year cause I’ve always been a bulldog as a child. I was wondering if you could let me know what you ever ended up doing. I understand that you have probably graduated by now but I would love to hear back from you since I was literally you four years in the future. Thanks
