should I use " you" or "one"

When writing college application essays, should I use the word you or one? my essays are personal I want the colleges to learn how I am outside my grades. Everyone keeps telling me that I should use "one" instead of "you" but I don't know why I think that by using "one" the essay becomes less personal and more formal. Am I right?

which one would you use? ( I'm working on the UC essay right now)

Avoid “you”/“one” at all costs…

^Agreed. The essay is about you, so avoid making general philosophical statements about humankind. Here’s an example:

Diversity Club taught me that I shouldn’t discriminate against others for their differences.

Diversity Club taught me that one shouldn’t discriminate against others for their differences.

Diversity Club taught me that you shouldn’t discriminate against others for their differences.

Which sounds the most personal to you?

Ok I see what your saying. THANK YOU
