I just finished my first semester at CC and did fairly well with 3 A’s and 1 B. I assume that is why I recently received a phone call from my CC saying I qualify to be a tutor. My father says it is worth being a tutor because it will look good on my resume. However, I’m a full time student majoring in EE and I’m already working a part time job 25 hours a week. Also, in the fall I have 4 classes + 2 labs so I’m going to be very busy. Is it really worth it trying to fit working as a tutor into my schedule? Will it truly be a benefit to my future resume like my father believes?
If you are already working part-time and have a demanding course schedule, I think you shouldn’t overwhelm yourself. Sure it might look good on your resume to be a tutor, but I think having a better understanding of EE and/or a personal project is going to be much more useful for your future education & career. If you don’t have the proper time to commit to being a tutor, both you and the student won’t benefit much.
I started to work as a teaching assistant and found it to be a good experience. I made more connections with students and professors, as well as enhanced my knowledge and skill set in the subjects I was assisting in.
Can you work less at you PT job? Does tutoring pay you more per hour?
I agree with your father that it’s a decent job for your resume.
Look at the requirements for being a tutor and figure out if they’re too demanding. At my school, tutors are normally supposed to work between seven and ten hours per week, but some students get permission to work less. The school will probably help you fit it into your schedule if it’s something you want to do. A lot of people find that tutoring is a good way to review lower-level material and therefore improve their grades.
