My son is a senior and has not yet applied to any colleges. I am a professor at a private school and received my
doctorate from UNC but I’m not sure if he should spend the time and money to apply based on his credentials. He has around 4.4 GPA with some AP classes, plays basketball, and scored a 30 on the ACT. He is also in Beta Club. Other than that, basically zero extra-curricular involvement. Any chance of being admitted? Although I attended grad school at UNC, I am not as familiar with the undergrad process. Thanks for any advice!
Because you graduated from UNC, your son would be considered a legacy. If you live in NC, that doesn’t make a difference, but it will help him if you live out of state. So he may have a chance and should apply if he is interested. I say “may” because we don’t know much about him, his essays, or recommendations.
The bigger question is why has he not applied to any schools yet? He needs to take responsibility for his own life and get going. The January deadlines are looming. In general, he should be looking at a variety of safety schools, matches, and reaches. UNC may be a reach for him.
Here’s the Class of 2020 Profile (this year’s freshmen): http://admissions.unc.edu/apply/class-profile-2/
Because the state mandates that 82% of UNC students be in-state residents, it is far easier for in-state applicants to be accepted, and their average stats are lower than those of out-of-state applicants.
So, if your son is in-state, his 30 would be in the range of typical students’ ACT scores. Of course, admission depends on a lot more than ACT scores.
Not sure what the other poster meant, but they can only take 18% OOS. They took 19% a yr or so ago and were fined a million $. Much easier in state. My daughter is applying but we’re out of state, she has nearly the same stats as your son. She loves the school so she’s hoping her essay will be great, but she knows the odds are against her but as we have a fee waiver might as well try…
Thank you for the responses. We will give it a shot and see what happens!
