My D is an incoming freshman and we have not received anything about what she needs for her dorm room - do they use twin or twin XL sheets? There are lots of ads running for college stuff and she's itching to shop, but I have no idea what she needs. What else does she need besides sheets and towels??

Hi!
My d will be a junior next year. Yes to the twin XL sheets. Your D should get her dorm assignment within the next few weeks. If she is not in an air conditioned dorm (Rose, Lazier, Kershaw, Rathje or Norris) she will need a smallish fan for her room. My D bought a fold up "sling" type chair that has been nice. A desk lamp and/or floor lamp depending on the dorm. Most of the dorms have lounges or kitchens with a microwave and frig, so you might want to wait on purchasing those until you see what is available.
(I am gazing at the pile of dorm "stuff" in the corner of my living room for ideas for you!) She bought a partitioned type hanger for her closet where she can put her shoes. This saves the closet floor space for her laundry basket, etc. A plastic 3 drawer cabinet has been helpful for...well it is crammed full of stuff and I am afraid to open it.

I asked my son and he said "Take less than you think you need." He really liked having a tool kit and a first aid kit. He never needed the first aid kit himself, but gave out things to others, esp. the thermometer. An underbed storage container is nice. There are types of lamps they won't allow. We got son an Ott light and he really liked it. The college will send you a list in the Parent Handbook you will get. Most frivolous item--I got him a mouse pad that looks like an Oriental rug. He likes it though.

I just looked at the handbook and there isn't much of a list, except warm clothes for the winter. They do say alarm clock, blankets, pillow, lamp and wastebasket. They will send you an offer to rent a combination microwave and small refrigerator unit. There was a microwave and full size refrig. in the lounge right outside my son's door, so he didn't need this. They don't allow halogen lamps or most electical appliances.

In addition to the good ideas above, and the routine stuff like desk accessories and bedding (don’t forget the XL mattress pad, by the way), here are a few “afterthought” items that our son was glad he brought: clip-on bed lamp, ethernet cable, surge suppressor, extension cord, doormat (great in the winter with the snowy boots going in and out all the time), collapsible laundry basket, poster tape, cup, bowl, and spoon. Have fun shopping!

Don't forget a shower caddy and shower shoes (cheap flip flops are fine).
