"Silly" things that your kid fell in love with at a college

Loving the posted pictures of the Oberlin chairs and Montana student union. So lest you think I’m a nutcase, here’s the two big fountains at Elon that totally made me love the place.

Cornell has cheese curds (kid grew up in Wisconsin) but doesn’t have her major.

Moravian is beautiful but doesn’t have her major.

School she attends has cute squirrels. The ONLY thing she liked when she started there, other than the generous financial aid package.

Not sure I can say she actually fell in love with this ‘silly’ thing since she already had a love for it beforehand, but it certainly got her attention.

My D walks to the neighboorhood swings on many days to swing for awhile as a favorite stress-relieving activity. We drove up to one college for a campus tour this spring and immediately saw a big plank/rope swing hanging from a huge tree. On the actual tour, we also saw another big rope/plank swing in the quad area. The tour guide told us a big swing had been hanging in that central quad location for generations and that alumni bring their kids and grnadkids to swing on it.

D will be attending that college. The swings didn’t seal the deal but they were a nice little bonus. She just got her room assignment last week. Won’t know for sure til we get back on campus next month but it looks like it’s possible she can see one of the swings from her dorm window.

Ithaca College - Fell in love with the Communications building. It was the TV studios that hit the nail in the head. It was probably all of Park that I fell in love with.

I have since left IC due to my pure hatred of television production. Oh how things change rather quickly.

I’m not “in love” with Auburn, but Toomer’s Corner was a definite plus! Their lemonade is pin Southern Living’s 50 things you must do before you die. And I am very happy I crossed that one off my list.

The streakers on admitted student day got our attention at Willamette, that’s for sure!

While waiting for the info session to start at Miami of Ohio, D pointed out a blurb in the promotional materials about some kind of toasted cinnamon roll. 2 hours later, towards the end of the tour, there was a gentleman waiting in the food court with samples of said cinnamon roll. It was perfect timing as we were starving. And they were yummy  D said it may have been one of the best parts of a tour ever.

The dorm dodgeball games at Coe and napping chairs at CMU.

Southern Oregon U’s “shoe tree” (not the kind you put your shoes on in the closet to keep them in shape–the kind that is a real tree with shoes hanging from it) and the clincher: gummy bacon candy in the bookstore!

A few tee shirts worn by students at MIT spoke very strongly to my daughter’s inner science nerd.

Bibliophile S loved the White library at Cornell:

UAB… 3 NMR scanners in chemistry building

Lazy River and Pool at Athletic Complex at Alabama. Then, to top it off, we found out there was an additional pool behind one of the dorms!
Roll Tide!

Rutgers - Horses grazing in the pasture just outside the window of a freshman dorm. Professor she contacted to speak with apologized that she couldn’t meet in her office, but we could drop by the barn to talk.

My kid’s school is very near a beach and has an overall beautiful campus. Definitely (to my dismay) a deciding factor since he turned down other offers that I, in my infinite parental wisdom, would have chosen. Thank goodness it is strong enough academically that we are willing to pay full freight.

nj2011mom – That certainly wasn’t my visual of a NJ campus, but I would have been enchanted!

oh and at UAB… the rock wall!! has a lazy river pool and great rec center too but he only uses the wall

Rutgers is one of the oldest ag, land grant colleges in the country, founded in 1766 and is the 8th oldest university in the US. Its ag school is one of the best in the country. The grazing horses we saw are part of a herd of 23 standardbred mares that are used in nutrition & equine exercise studies. (D1 is taking Horse Practicum next semester and will earn credits for mucking out stalls weekly!)

I really didn’t like Bard when I visited but I almost wanted to consider it because they had so many bunnies and moles/groundhogs running around.

The football field/stadium at ECU. When my brother, a university employee took S2 on a private tour of the football stadium including walking out to mid-field and taking it in from a player’s perspective (S2 was a four year starter for his h.s. team) S2 was sold.
