Hi i’ve always dreamed of going to brown, but the more i read it just seems more and more unlikely. I was hoping my sats or ecs would take me there, but my gpa is getting so low that it might be impossible. Even so, after visiting brown i just can’t get it out of my head. Are there any schools with a similar feel to brown, except maybe easier to get in?

here are some of my stats if that would help :
gpa unweighted 3.48
gpa weighted 3.70
SAT Reasoning 2280
SAT Subject Math 2 800
SAT Subject Physics 720 (i have not taken the physics course yet)
current courses/ completed courses that might look good: french4ap, calculus BC ap, european history ap, english 4(took advanced english previous years), physics ap, statistics ap
ECs:eagle scout, interact club treasurer, swim team captain

look at Rice University. It’s completely different but another possibility is Oberlin.

Depends what you liked: the particular department: sciences, geo, music, etc., the size, location, the 'attitude", that it’s Ivy, the Open curriculum, the P/F possibilities, what?

I really liked the atmosphere of brown and the people. Also tufts, rice, and oberlin might be too hard for me. Some other schools that i’ve looked at are BU, BC, vassar, amherst, grinnell, wesleyan, skidmore, kenyon, carelton, middlebury, and pomona, but they all seem like they’re a bit too difficult to get into. I guess what i’m looking for are some lower tier schools with similar atmospheres and people to brown. Right now i am thinking of applying to Brown and Boston University, but i don’t feel like i have very high chances of getting in. Are there maybe any schools i could consider for my third tier? Or should i maybe add schools to my first or second tier? thanks for responding!

Oberlin is a good match. Look at Macalester too. I didn’t think BU and Brown were all that similar except the location, but if you saw a similarity, good.

gpa weighted 3.70 / SAT Reasoning 2280 - That’s an interesting combo that may require some explanation on your application. (How are your grades weighed)?

You should look into Elon University in NC.

thanks for all the suggestions! I haven’t really heard of some of these so i’ll have to read up a bit. So far through the college board “how do i stack up” feature it seems like i’m not really cut out for a lot of these schools, but maybe i’m just paranoid. I really need the assurance that i’ll make it into at least one school that i’d be happy to go to.

About the gpa system at my school, each regular A is given 4 points, B 3 points, C 2 points etc. For AP classes the points are each raised by one. My bad gpa is my fault for fooling around too much and putting school second. I was never much of a homework person and depended on test scores to pass classes.

Also, take a look at the book Colleges That Change Lives, by Loren Pope. It includes 40 interesting colleges, most of which are significantly less competitive to get into than Brown, but which have motivated students, involved professors, and remarkable track records in terms of grad school admissions, etc. You might find some good options there.
