I’m surprised Bates hasn’t been mentioned yet. It has a very interesting Rhetoric, Film and Screen Studies major. Rhetoric, Film, and Screen Studies | Bates College Has a very good arts department too, and a sizable contingent of outdoorsy and arty students.
Plus guaranteed snowboarding, plus close to Portland, Maine, which has a very cool small city vibe. The college runs free shuttles to Portland every weekend. The Portland airport is only 40 minutes away and Boston is only two hours away. Lewiston itself has plenty of restaurants and shopping.
For Bard’s geographical peers, a group that overlaps curricularly and atmospherically as well, consider colleges historically influenced by the Hudson River, principally Sarah Lawrence, Vassar and Skidmore.
You asked for CA or New England, so no one suggested Lewis and Clark. It is suburban, but very easy to get into Portland. There is skiing and snowboarding at Mt. Hood, which is about 1.5 hours away.
I think he’d be able to find a tv/film group to be involved with in Portland.
True–as the conversation and replies evolved I thought I would see if the PNW had options that might be programmatic or cultural fits. Thanks for your feedback.
I haven’t been there in years, but SUNY New Paltz was quite the artsy place.
As for Whitman, Walla Walla, WA, where Whitman is located, is a very cool town. I’ve long thought it was one of the nicest LAC campuses in the PNW. There are some interesting sculptures scattered around the campus, so there must be some kind of art program there.
I noticed that many who applied to Bennington also applied to Lewis and Clark. Bennington and Sarah Lawrence are options. I have to say, we loved Clark in Worcester. It is one of the Colleges that Change LIves. You might want to look at the CTCL website.
I’m so glad to hear you loved Clark–it’s on his list to explore for sure! I have spent some time on the CTCL website (my son’s older sister just graduated and is off to her first year at college in just a few weeks so it feels like we are perpetually searching for colleges)
I remember sitting in the Dartmouth admissions waiting room and everyone was talking about Clark! I visited it several times and loved the vibe. The freshman seminars were tantalizing (any other parent wishing they could go to college again?). I liked the involvement with the surrounding community too. Majors look interesting. Clark and Brown were my favorite schools during our search (times three kids).
