Do you write different essays for every college you apply to, or just the same essay?

No, each college has it’s own prompt, but they’re usually very similar. Also, Common App colleges require the same long essay, but they may require additional short ones.

Bumpity bump bump.

For Common App schools, you will submit the same 500 word Common App essay. Some schools may also require additional essays. Some of those will have broad topics that are easy to fit a prewritten essay into; others are school-specific.

lol @post #3.

When I did my apps I used the same 5 or so essays for all my schools. It’s best to start with the schools that only give one prompt and write an essay for them, then proceed onto the schools that give you a choice so you can maybe edit a previous essay to fit their prompt. Colleges don’t collaborate together to see if you’ve re-used your essays for other schools. Just make sure that if you’ve mentioned the school’s name in an essay, it’s the right name on each app. Don’t want to accidentally send your “Why Columbia?” essay to Stanford, haha.
