Simplified Needs Test and Student Income

Hello,

I make about $35K a year and can file a 1040A so we have qualified for SNT for the past three years. Our 2012-13 EFC was $2358 and my son qualified for a $3,200 Pell Grant, work study, Subsidized Stafford Loan, and his university also gave him almost $10,000 grant. Our actual contribution ends up being about $8,600/year.

Our question is: He has been talking to College Entrepreneurs (has anyone have knowledge of them?), and he is thinking of working for them over the summer. I don't know yet if he will be considered an employee or an independent contractor. In order to qualify for SNT, if he earns enough to have to file a return, does he have to be able to file a1040 A or EZ, too?

I admire his ambition but don't want to lose our ability to qualify for SNT.

Thank you!

No, only the parent info is used to determine SNT for a dependent student.

Thank you, kelsmom–appreciate it.
