Question - which essay are you guys writing for #2? I’m not an URM and I’m not underprivileged. I’ve done some pretty good summer research, but I feel like the extracurric/internship essay would turn out boring…

@numbersense no, just copy & paste your essay in to the text box - it’s not going to turn out double spaced.
I’m just taking a screenshot from my laptop, cropping it to show just the scores, and uploading it.

Does anyone think I should submit proof of my awards or just my resume?

@lisalee if you still have those questions I’ll attempt to respond. I try not to browse CC during admissions season.

1) when you receive your acceptance letter, do they already tell you what group and/or mentor they will assign you to? If not, when will you find out (ie, after you start the program, or just a little before?)

You know your group. Not everyone gets first choice but a majority do because it is extremely selective. You are then given a spreadsheet with mentors and you rank your choices and send it back. Then in a few weeks they tell you your assignment beforehand. It’s up to your PI to contact you before or at the start of the program. I started a week earlier than everyone else.

2) Are you given any choice(s) for research groups / mentor, or it’s just assigned to you?
See above. Given choice.

3) Do you have any chance to interact with any Stanford professors, or only graduate students?
I interact with my PI on a weekly basis and attended lab meetings and ISIS lectures which were tailored for grad students and faculty. My PI encouraged me to apply for a graduate level computational conference at Stanford and I surprisingly got accepted with my research and gave a talk. Got to miss school. Was the only high schooler there presenting in front of faculty and students. But you really get to know the graduate student you get assigned to.

However, many other kids had different experiences. I know some people who didn’t get to meet their PI’s once.

4) Since there is no dorm, are there many chances for SIMR fellows to interact with each other?

Yes. Absolutely. We all tried to coordinate lunches and as said above there were socials. In addition, many of us from the east bay commuted with each other and got to annoy the entire bus line.

5) Do most of you finish your research in time and wrote / present paper at the end of the program?

LOLOLOLOL. Depends on the PI and project. Some people finished and wrote papers. My PI invited me to stay afterwards and I’m still working at Stanford. So we tailored my project to have a mini conclusion by the end of SIMR so I could present a powerpoint and poster, but we’re still working on a paper hopefully to be published.

Question - is anyone submitting an abstract from their past research? If so, what does it mean “provide a link after the abstract with the full citation of the paper”?

I wrote a paper for my research project last summer but didn’t publish it. So I’m not sure what the “link” means… Do I just put the citation for my paper, as in MLA or APA format?

Also, my research isn’t related to medicine at all, and I didn’t use any related technologies or equipment; my topic was plants, and the most sophisticated piece of equipment I used was probably the pH meter or osmometer xD So is it still worth uploading my abstract?

Help please! (Shouldn’t have procrastinated, sigh…)

I have relevant research experience, but I’m not attaching an abstract or anything.

@mitboundyolo, why you don’t attach your abstract?

I feel like the essays are the only representative writing I need

i haven’t even finished my essays yet yolo

Good luck guys! SIMR 2011 alumnus here

I haven’t even started my essays… Woooo!

@studiousmaximus

honestly i started doing the simr essays and then scrapped all plans for any other summer programs - this is the first and last thing i’m going to sign up for. =____=

I mean, I’ve basically already written the first essay for other program applications. But I still have to tailor it to SIMR and then write the second essay.

I honestly don’t care if I get in or not. Not like it’ll affect college or whatever. I just want to spend one last summer on the west coast before going to the cold depths of mass

Just out of curiosity, how many of you are writing on the diversity prompt and aren’t actually “diverse”?

I haven’t started my essays either. I think I’ll be most productive on Saturday. Yup.

i wrote the diversity essay and i am an asian male

What did you write about in your essay? I wrote on the diversity one as well and I’m also asian

they cancelled sharp

i wrote diversity… and i’m asian (or subasian). just uploaded my application. feels awesome to be done!!

…

now time for those other apps :)

The SIMR website is down today?
