@kattymiao I know this answer is late but they don’t choose you by institute. It goes first you are in or out and then they assign you to the institutes in the order that you ranked them.
@evanescent0129 Adding on to what you said, SIMR also probably doesn’t want to take the risk of getting involved in housing-related issues that might show up once the program has started.
@photogeek8 it actually has to do with money. Last year on our last orientation Dr. Utz said that it would cost $250k to include housing which is $250k over budget
any word on when results are coming out?
any word on when results are coming out?
Hi everybody!
I am thinking of applying for the 2016 summer SIMR program. However, I have a few questions that I hope the community of like-minded people and past participants in the program can answer:
- Do out-of-state students stand a chance? I read that they strongly favor local students, but how much does this impact my chances if I am not a California resident?
- Are there any popular places where a non-local student could find housing? I am thinking of easy access to the Stanford campus at a reasonable rent. Also, how likely is it that I will be able to find someone else to share rent with and live together with?
- How much free time would I have in the SIMR program and would there be time for recreation and meeting other people in the program and such?
@evanescent0129 Yeah, I believe it’s unfair as well. But I think it was in their FAQ that the limit was because of grant requirements. They have to take a certain # of Bay Area kids to get the grant for the program, which I believe makes very little sense considering Stanford’s gargantuan endowment.
@mochilate1897 In 10 days (25th), I believe!
@kattymiao Good luck to you as well!
I can’t believe results are coming out in a few days. I am far from mentally prepared for a rejection letter.
@evanescent0129 omg same!!! I’m seriously quetioning why I applied in the first place, I have no bio or medical experience…
@kattymiao @evanescent0129 Yeah, I’m like 99% sure of rejection.
guys im soo scared I also applied i hope I get in!!
Do they prefer URM students??
@futuredoc99 yes
Hey guys! Few more days… What did some of u guys write your essays on?
@1999something Science Olympiad for me. A humorous essay detailing how I learned to build two 1st place winning devices at the State comp. through lots of failures and an ultimate success. Second was my learning that my grandfather having parkinson’s motivating me to start research.
@joeweller for me, first one was about how immunology has become the looking glass through which I perceive the world (I’ve studied it pretty extensively), and how I draw inspiration for immunology from art and humanities. Second one was about lessons I’ve learned from my cancer research/immunology group. Where u from? I’m near Stanford.
Good luck to everyone tomorrow!
@evanescent0129 you as well!
@1999something I’m in a state directly east of CA
I looked on the 2014 thread, it seems like people were getting called with acceptances too. Is that still a thing this year? There’s no indication of it on the SIMR site…
@evanescent0129 it is still very much a thing!! They actually call you around an hour to half an hour before decisions are emailed!
