Single or Double?

StPlayrXtreme, the same thing happened to us, though I was the one who got the off campus apartment. The person I was going to room with was completely fine about it though; he doesn't care who he's rooming with. The only downside is I'm paying 900/month for a studio apartment instead of about 650 for a dorm...

Hoteliegrl- Def! Email me about Cornell Days! My email address is my sn @ aol.
Oh yea- I remember on the Cornell tour the tour guide said that if you request a single you will most likely get one because theres an over abundance.

$800 a year is like 100/mo. that's really not so bad at all.

true, spar, $800 is not bad if you want a single. But if you really don't have a preference, then an extra $100 a month isn't a bad deal. If you're set on a single, then the extra cost doesn't matter too much.

haha, towerpumpkin, should be a nice appartment though. Yeah, I would have looked into an appartment if it wasn't more than $200 more per month. . . .though I'll probably be to the point where I'll want an appartment junior year. We'll see.

yeah, i'm just saying that when you look at the cost for the whole year it seems like a lot more than if you look at it for standard housing billing periods, which are monthly.

Tower I feel you on the apartments... I got a studio next year, and including parking it'd be cheaper for me to live in Manhattan than Ithaca. Housing up here is absolutely ridiculous.

When do we get our rooming assignments anyway?

Incoming freshmen get them early-mid July, IIRC.

theres no way you'll be put in Balch if you request coed right? thats like my biggest fear.

it could happen, since I'd imagine that Balch doesn't have enough requests to fill it up

it happens on occasion

really? are you able to change if you get it and didnt request it. i dont know what i would do if i was in an all female dorm or a themed housing or something!

what matters to me is how many roomates i have and the residents of the hall-if they are quiet or rowdy 24/7. it would be very boring if it was quiet all the time and annoying if the hall was loud all the time. im not a themed living enivorment person either.

hoteliegirl:

http://housing.cornell.edu/housing_residential/yhaFAQ.asp

I was assigned to a program house but did not ask for it. Can I get a new assignment?

Yes, you can apply for a room change and note that issue on the room change form. We will only be able to make you a room change offer if we have other spaces available. Make sure you specify that you did not originally request to live in a Program House.

but theres a very small chance that I could end up in Balch if I didnt request it right?

Well Balch has a 386 person capacity. Supposing 5% of Balch goes unfilled (a generous estimate most likely) and they need to fill that 5% with Cornellians who did not request to live there. That means that 19 people will have to live in Balch against their will. What is the chance that you will be one of those 19? Let's estimate using the size of the class of 2009 (3108). There is a .6% chance that you will have to live in Balch if 5% of Balch isn't filled and then must be filled by other freshmen. That percentage would be smaller if one accounted for the freshmen who choose to live in other program houses, thus subtracting themselves from the pool of 3108 students.

In other words, under probably overestimated circumstances, in a room filled with 100 incoming freshmen, rounding up, only 1 person would have to live at Balch against his or her will.

His or her :o

I think you are forgetting that only girls can live there :)

So, assuming 49% of the incoming class are girls (1523), and assuming that Balch is 95% filled by request (1523-367 = 1156): 19 of those 1156 will end up in Balch against their will, giving you a 1.64% chance of getting there.

Still pretty slim.

ahh!! Very astute, live, thanks. I can't believe I overlooked that fact.

haha thanks guys I feel better! Ugh... how would 95% of Balch be filled by request though. What girls would want that?! haha. aright maybe im being too judgemental. But anyway.... I filled out my housing forms and requested a single!!! I sort of did it on a whim b/c ive had trouble deciding so i just went for it! Im excited though. I really wanna be in Dickson even though I prob wont :( Donlon doesnt have singles right?

No singles in Donlon. Odds are you'll be in Dickson if you chose a single because that has the highest concentration of them (I THINK). I chose a single too! No worries, that's why we chose a mid-size school, lots of people to befriend!
