Is there a way to hold off disbursement of a Stafford Loan until the spring semester? The way my parents are helping fund my education, I would not need a loan in the fall, only the spring.

I know the interest that would be accrued on $2,750 (5500/2) for a few months isn't much, but it's still unnecessary. It'd make more sense for me to try to have the entire $5,500 credited in the spring.

Thanks for your help!

You can turn down the loan initially, then file a loan revision request for the spring term. If you are requesting a spring-only loan, paid in a single disbursement, your eligibility will be based on the cost of attendance for a single term & a 4 or 5 month EFC (your school will adjust accordingly).

The best thing to do is ask your school’s financial aid office how to go about requesting a spring-only loan.

Alternately, you can file for the Stafford or Direct loan in Nov, causing the first disbursement to occur in Dec and the second disbursement in Jan. Be sure that you have filed the FAFSA well in advance of the loan application.

If you apply for the loan late enough, you may get the full disbursement in Jan; But this may not be a sure thing.
