Single vs double room

What are the pros and cons of having a single room? Does the potential peace and quiet outweigh missing out on having a roomie?

I think it really depends on you as a person. If you're personable and outgoing having a single won't matter at all. There's still a whole hall of people to hang out with and other people with singles. Also, the dorms with singles are also the dorms with hall bathrooms. You automatically have a bunch of people to hang out with.

I guess the pros are having your own space, not having to compromise about noise and visitors, peace and quiet, etc. The cons would be not having someone around the first few days of school, not learning how to compromise and live with other people, etc.

I personally enjoyed having a roommate in the beginning of the year, but towards the middle and end I wished I could have had a single. Having a roommate definitely taught me a lot about compromising.

If you have a single and don't want one you can always request a change during room thaw. And if not you can always have a roommate sophomore year.

Yeah, I don't think that it's any harder for people with singles to make friends than it is for people with doubles. It really depends on what type of person you are. I liked having a roommate my freshman (and sophomore and junior) year, but I'm looking forward to my single next year.

For your freshman year, it is probably better to have a roomie. However, for my sophomore year I have a single, I just want my own space.

Having a roommate freshman year is essential; even if you hate him/her.

I don't think that's quite true Saket. There are plenty of people who get along fine without roommates freshman year.

I'm not talking about making friends and stuff. You would do fine with a single making friends and stuff.

Let me put it this way, I didn't like my roommate a whole lot this past year. But I would have rather roomed with him freshmen year than be alone.

I agree, I think it is just good at the very least to learn to deal with people. I was lucky, my roomie and I didn't even raise our voices at eachother once.

I agree that its valuable to have a roommate freshman year, but I don't think it's the be all end all. Some people do better with singles I think.
