jmmom, so nice to know there might be hope yet. I've never received a phonecall from mathson. I've gotten a couple of terse IM's or emails - of the "I forgot my alarm clock" variety.

I received a nice email listing his classes and that he was elected president of his "house" in the dorm.

Wow, jmmom -- that IS a cause for celebration! Here's to the Gary Coopers of the world, the strong and silent types who can make their moms' day with just a phone call.

My usual response to seeing my kid's name on the caller ID is to act like the phone has suddenly turned into deadly kryptonite and is radiating space gas. Even though I know that picking it up will probably lead to more gray hair and a mini-stroke, I tell myself that I should pick it up because it might be something important. The pressure is on to grab it before the answering machine picks up, and I have to embarrass myself by pretending that I wasn't standing there the whole time trying to decide whether or not to talk to this person.

But, I know what you mean. It's GREAT when they call just to chat. :)

Wow, jmmom, that is really something. Six times!

I have two boys who never call, well, hardly ever, so, well, I'm vicariously thrilled by this news!

We did have something unusual happen recently, though, also, with one of the boys (both of them college graduates now) though I missed it, because I was out. My husband called one of them and they talked for an hour and a half, and my husband says (not sure if I believe him) that the son commented at the end of the conversation, something along the lines of "Wow. We talked for an hour and a half. That was fun." Huh? Fun? Wow . . . talking to one of the parents was fun. That remark definitely made my husband's day!

Still basking in the glow here.

Only marginally diminished by his faint, but definitely exasperated, sigh on the phone today. He'd called to ask me to ship a couple of forgotten items. When I started a sentence that indicated I was actually going to ask a question.... the sigh ensued.

Oh well. It was another phone call.

I just shipped D2 off on a plane alone for the first time to visit D1 at school. I saw her through security -- and after her bag cleared the x-ray machine (over-loaded, we feared, with items requested by D1), she turned around, gave me a thumbs up, and headed off down the concourse. I need a drink. We may be empty nesters for only four days, but it feels like forever.... yet yesterday she was waving good-bye from preschool. Okay -- enough crying in my pinot.

IK,

Enjoy your four days of freedom, just like in the pre-child era.

With all the bad financial news lately, I'm surprised more folks aren't in here having a good stiff one. Or crying in their beer.

Hey, should we send the marmots to go straighten out those geniuses on Wall Street & in Washington?

Or are there not enough marmots in the world? :(

Can't wait to hear how the visit goes, IvoryK!!

jmmom--
Are you still basking in the glow??? I am there with you, though in a slightly different light. I called DS#@ last night to ask him a question and he was...... wait for it....... ............ in the library!!! I almost fell over!! I am taking him at his word, and I cut the call short so he could get back inside (he had to step out to return my call). Hmmmmmm... maybe it was all a rouse to get me off the phone quick? Nah- he didn t have to return my call, right?

mommusic-
I had my Hs car at the dealership this morning. The showed Bush's statement on the waiting room TV-- it was on CNN. SImultaneously they show the stock market prices dropping as we was speaking!

jym--cause and effect? :D

I hardly ever watch TV so I hear these things but at least I am not glued to the TV like some. I am just going to bury my head in the sand until it's all over.

But let's not turn this into an economic or political discussion! So...how're the kids? :)

Rescued from the very bottom of p. 2!

A cute email is going around...a doctored clip showing one squirrel giving another a little back rub. No idea how they did it but it's SO cute.

I thought of our marmots. :)

Here to raise a coffee mug (it is pretty early, after all!) to having visited the last of the schools on S's list! Perhaps a little late, but since neither are his top choices ... As we were making the 6+ hour drive back from the 2nd one, H told S if he ends up going there, perhaps we'd drop him off and pick him up 4 years later! :) Finishing touches on THE ESSAY this week ... Things are coming together. Trust me, when it's completely finished, I'll be in here having something a lot stiffer than coffee!

Page three rescue!

Sending a round to all the regulars!

SB

what's to toast to? Please -- somebody -- anything?!?!?!

TFSFH has his first serious girlfriend and is giddily happy?

works for me... Yay for mootmom's s's girlfriend.... and okay, while we're at it.... go Phillies! Iron City all around for anyone in the Alley who knows what Iron City is!

Lets all get tipsy and watch project runway.

What if we're in the same room as DH... who doesn't get Project Runway?

Here's a primer for those, without this particular DH challenge, who want to watch both the debate and PR.... How to watch the presidential debate and 'Project Runway' finale without missing anything

Late Breaking News: DH is cashing it in! Too tired for the debate. Now I can pull up a virtual chair with my virtual friends and use my clicker to follow the above instructions for being a responsible citizen and having Project Runway fun, all at once.

So what if the market tanked another zillion points? Life is good :D.

jmmom, that's perfect^^^

I thought all three made really beautiful things, Korto's the most waerable, Leanns the sharpest and most cohesive, and Kenley's the best tailored.
