Bump.

Much of the country is having single digit weather. There is a serious shortage of degrees out there.

Come on in--we're having hot tea spiked with rum! And there are plenty of peanuts & cheese doodles.

Plus, it will make those of us from the single digit parts of the country feel warmer! Disney World = Florida = warm weather = sunny summer thoughts! Next thing you know we'll be adding umbrellas to the drinks in here. :)

Windchill predicted to be twenty below zero here tomorrow. Trying to think warm thoughts, and not look at the gas meter outside....

Marmots, stay in your holes.

I'm in! And I have more treats for all......I had a big event scheduled at school yesterday with 20 volunteers coming in to help, and we had our first weather-related closure in the six and a half years I've been here. So you all can enjoy my volunteers' lunch!

The roads were fine by afternoon, so we took a drive down the Mosel to see the ice breakers busting open a path on the river for the coal barges. It was cool!

I'm getting hot under the collar dealing with the college board, so I'm pretty warm!

You don't want to know. Suffice it to say every time I respond to one of their emails (which don't make sense or are generic answers) I get an email reply from a DIFFERENT person, saying I can call their office. But I can never speak to anyone who knows anything.

I don't think anyone reads my emails. It's like trying to contact Betty Crocker. :D

I could use the fur of the marmot right now DH has house set at 66!! told us all to dress warmer. ( I think I might sleep with a ski hat, maybe that will change his tune) DD answer is a welcome to Alaska sign on her door.

Can she see Russia from her window, 4giggles?

I was always wondering about the magic material inside my D's thin Marmot Mountainworks jacket that made it so warm... Marmot fir - I bet that's what it is!

This discussion is making the marmots nervous. They are all hibernating in a safe place until spring. We'll be in trouble if we need their services before then. :D

When it's in the single digits (or single negative digits) outside, long underwear works wonders.

My problem is keeping warm at night. If H is out of town I just can't seem to warm up, no matter how many layers I pile on.

I was never happy camping...I would freeze my watchamacallit off, no matter how efficient my sleeping bag was supposed to be.

Jym- that made me laugh!!!

How is everyone doiing this cold and wintery morning??

11 degrees here. 7 16/18 yr olds asleep somewhere in house, they have no school today so they can study for midterms that are next week,Yeah like that is going to happen!

Realizing I am going to have to go out because I know I will not have enough food for them!! Oh and 9 year old who conned his way into staying home. the 11 year old went to school, figured it was calmer there.

Stay warm everyone.

It's 17 below zero here in Chicago suburbs -- just went up from 19 below. I have had it. I am afraid to go out of my house, and fortunately, I don't have to.

I am going to bake some cookies today, make some necklaces, listen to npr and enjoy cc.

Hope no one gets stuck out in this horrendous cold. I worry about the wild rabbits in my neighborhood. All year round I put out rabbit kibble, fruits, veggies and water for them, and I get a great deal of pleasure watching them in my yard. They haven't come for food in a week. Guess they are snowed in wherever they are huddling. We also have about 11 inches of snow on the ground.

One S is in Cgo, other S and D are in Cleveland, they are not impressed by the "cold" in SW Ohio, esp. since they have snow and we don't!

I just told them about the coldest winter I ever experienced, in the late 70s, when H and I walked to the movies one night in -24 weather. At the time we thought it would be something to tell our children about some day. LOL

I could always say it was uphill both ways but somehow I don't think that would help.

It is just too dang cold here too. Just a bit below zero this am. At least it will warm up to freezing in a couple more days. We have one faucet that froze a few years ago , and although I think we solved the problem (with some insulation) , I'm still keeping that one on a drip. My son is going up to Vermont to ski this weekend. Brrr... At least there is lots of snow and not too many crowds.

When I woke up yesterday morning (Iowa) our thermometer read minus 24! I can't remember it ever being that cold. It ultimately warmed up to about minus 12.

Today it's downright balmy. Started at minus 12 and has warmed up to 15 degrees above zero.

I am cheering because it has just gotten up to zero degrees! Time to break out the bubbly. . .the non alcoholic kind, that is.

I was searching for a thread that discussed what temperature people have their thermostats set at and found this. Our is at 64 right now. For the first time, I find it chilly. Does it matter that it's -8 outside?

I like the thermostat set low when I sleep, but in the day would prefer a slightly warmer house. Maybe 66? Or I should just get off the computer and do stuff to warm up.

We lowered ours during the day to 64/65. I thought I would hate it, but adapted pretty well. More clothes. Laptop computer makes a nice personal heater :D. Lap blanket/throw.

We have always kept night temp around 63/64 and had a programmable thermostat bring it to 68 about 45 minutes before wake-up time. I HATED getting up cold to go to bathroom/shower etc.

Strangely, I don't mind it now. I do wear more at night, too, though. Mind over matter might be part of it. Just couldn't stand the idea of lining the fuel companies' pockets. Even though prices have abated greatly, it's now a matter of pride to keep the temp down and cope.

I have a friend who keeps hers 24/7 at 59 degrees. Has done so for years. Wears long underwear. Now THAT is beyond the beyond IMO.
