Hey guys, so I’m a student at Florida Tech, Studying Computer Engineering. Im currently a sophomore and am looking forward to transfer out of FIT and move to another school.
I’m looking forward to apply to California State universities and I;m in a dilemma about which ones to apply to. I have SJSU & Cal Poly on my mind for now. I’m kinda worried about not making the right decision as its a really important one.
I really want to know how both campuses are different in terms of-

Any extra information, previous experiences and any other college suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
You really should come visit. With that said, they are quite different. Poly is a bit more of a typical college experience with a cohesive campus and very few part time students. Not many upper classmen live on campus, but those who do stay in a nice apartment style dorm, poly canyon village. I’d give the academic nod to Poly also, but SJSU has a good reputation and is located well for internships. Weather, they are both good, but SLO is nearly perfect due to its seaside location. Seventy and sunny is the norm. Location, SLO, with one exception. It really is a great location as it has lots of good shopping, food, etc, but is small due to its isolation. San Jose is closer to big city things, like pro sports and better restaurants, but it’s in a big city. The bad of SLO is that it is hard to fly in and out of. It’s a small commuter from SF. SJSU will be an easier admit. Poly is VERY competitive for transfers. Again, they’re pretty different. It’s worth a visit.
I would second everything posted by @eyemgh . We visited both campuses last spring, and I am pretty familiar with both cities from a number of visits over the last 2 decades. There is no comparison in terms of the campus and the immediately surrounding area. Poly is your typical college town with a very easygoing, safe feel. SJSU is in downtown San Jose, which brings in the typical issues such as homeless, traffic, lack of good off-campus housing, etc. It is a very good school for the computer related fields (not quite as good as Poly), but the campus feel and the surrounding area killed it for us.
“paully101”: Ask yourself…Do I love hiking, biking, kayaking, surfing, small house parties, barbeques, etc. (If yes, Cal Poly might be a good choice) or Do I love going to clubs, travelling art exhibits, single people over the age of 24, etc. (If yes, SJSU might be a good choice). It’s big city metro vs. small town.
Thanks a lot @eyemgh, @ocgolfdad@Redishwoods . That was really descriptive. I’m planning to Visit both campuses during the winter break. I realize the campuses might be quite empty but ill still get an idea. Im currently in a small town next to the beach called Melbourne, Its really Calm here but not much to do, Orlando and Miami are 1-2 hours drive away but its not easy to commute as there a no public transits. Is it that the same with California. Current me if I’m wrong but Being an international student i feel its important to have a busy campus like that of Cal Poly.
@ocgolfdad, from whatever posts i have read is SJSU really that bad as compared to Cal Poly. I mean i will be applying to both colleges. And might chose Cal Poly over SJSU but will it be a bad decision to move to SJSU from Florida Tech.
@Redishwoods, Those are some really good questions, Cal Poly sounds like a place where i would really enjoy. I was brought up in a city and love the city. Being in melbourne which is a really small town, really wanted me to move to a big city as i missed a bit of the metropolitan feeling. How far is san Obispo if i want to go to san jose or sf?
I think your visits will tell you most of what you need to know. Make sure you coordinate with someone in the department and admissions so that you can see labs, classes, clubs, etc.
@paully101 I certainly didn’t mean to imply that SJSU is a bad place. It is not. However, it has a much different feeling than SLO. I know people who went there and had a great experience. Also remember that you would have great access to internships with the big Silicon Valley tech companies, more so than at SLO. You should visit both and make up your own mind.
Thanks a lot guys, I will definitely visiting both campus and seeing how there are! This has been really helpful, If i have more questions i will be posting of the same thread. Thanks again
Hey! So I got rejected from SJSU for a stupid requirement but I’m still looking forward to apply to more colleges in california. I’m sorta tired of banging my head as i don’t know which university will be best for computer engineering. What universities would you suggest.
