My nephew has been accepted to Skidmore. He's an actor with a fair amount of training in Shakespeare and musical theater and very excited, but I'm curious to hear from people who know the program. What's the vibe? Is it a cut-throat atmosphere? Thanks.

My son has been accepted at Skidmore and he will most likely double major in Theater and Computer Science, so I have been doing quite a bit of research online into their Theater program. To answer your question directly, my research so far leads me to believe that it is not only NOT cut-throat, it is very collaborative and learning oriented. The whole vibe about Skidmore is --it seems-- the very opposite of nasty. There is a publication online that the Theater Department produces that shows 2012 student productions and in the back, a very extensive number of alumni posts from those who were Theater majors. The vibe is one of fun, support, and post-Skidmore success in acting, directing, set design, drama teaching, Hollywood and New York endeavors and even other humanities studies at top graduate and professional schools all over the country. Here is the link for the most recent newsletter: http://www.skidmore.edu/academics/theater/events/Newsletter%20Spring%202012.pdf

Being a liberal arts college and not a conservatory, I think there is a lot less competition and cut-throatedness than in some other theatre programs. The college seems to want to foster student initiative and collaboration, and there are a lot of resources and opportunities available to them. I know a couple of Skidmore theatre grads and they absolutely loved the program and the education they received.

They just did Sweeney Todd and the vibe among people who saw it was that it was excellent-definitely of conservatory caliber. I tried to get tickets but it was sold out the night I was available.
