My son is a 6th grader. Since he is so much ahead academically and also he is very mature, his school principle recommended him to skip 7th grade. However, we are very hesitated to let him skip since he is already the youngest in his grade (he skipped a grade in elementary school). I am thinking if he can skip 7th grade and later repeat 9th grade, so that he can skip the easy classes in 7th grade, but on the other hand, he doesn't need to start college too early. On his 2nd 9th grade year, he can take more advanced (10th grade level) classes. There are so many AP classes so I think he should still have classes to take in his senior year.
Will this be possible? How will this show up on his high school transcript and college application? Anyone has any suggestion or experience to share? Thanks a lot.

First of all, i am really happy to come across such a ‘talented’ parent, who is concerned about his child in rightful manner. But you didn’t mention your location. So i have to give a very generalized response. Yes, let him skip the 7th grade. Instead of repeating the 9th, i will suggest you to plan ways, such that his ECA and other activities are well co-ordinated with his studies. And, let him give an SAT exam now. YES, you heard it right, now ! Ans see if he could qualify, for the John Hopkins University Young Achievers award. ( This sentence will sound awakward if you do not live in the United States). And then, againa a SAT exam when he is in the 9th grade. And as for ‘skipping’ classes is concerned, i myself skipped a grade in Elementary school, and in Junior high, but had to take a gap-year after 12. But do not worry. I also suggest you to read one atricle by Dave Berry, which is in the 'Preparing For Ivy’section of this website. And another article in the MIT admissions blog, titled ‘Preparing for MIT’. Thanks.

Thanks for your suggestion. We live in the US. My son qualified for CTY with very high scores in both subjects in 3rd grade, right after he skipped a grade. He is going to take SAT later this year. I didn’t find an article related to skipping grade by Dave Berry. Can you please send me a link? We are still debating over the pros and cons about skipping. You said you had to take a gap-year. Is that because you were too young for college? If my son skips 7th grade, he will go to college at 16. Additionally, he might have less chance to get to those very top universities (due to one less year for competitions, activities, sports, etc.).

How does your son feel about repeating 9th grade? imo, there isn’t much value in skipping a grade. For some reason, I see the need to get ahead of the schedule in the US, a lot. After you’re in college, I don’t see much difference. Your son should be taking the classes he wants to take, not necessarily what he thinks will help him the most in getting into a good college. It took me 3 semesters, but I’m finally wishing I hadn’t taken the extra math class, and the extra engineering class. Instead, I wish I had taken my econ class earlier, and taken a philosophy class. If you want your son to have the different options in diverse fields in his 9th grade or anytime during high school, sure, go ahead! but if you just want him to take calc BC or an advanced college class, I don’t really see the use of it.

Also, FYI, this is the sub-forum for international applicants from Nepal. The high school system is much different and the college application process is slightly different as well. You might want to check out parent’s cafe or something if you really want to make the decision for your son.

Thanks sixstringsrocker. I am new here. I didn’t know I was posting in a wrong sub-forum. As a matter of fact, I didn’t select sub-forum. Thanks for suggesting me to post on more approrpiate sub-forums.
