Skip Multivariable Calculus?

I took a course in MC during my senior year of high school and am wondering whether it would be a good idea to "skip" MC and go straight to LA and DE in my first semester. Would this jump be too much for a student to handle? If I were to do this, I would definitely brush up on my MC during the summer. Thanks for any responses in advance.

LA/DE really has nothing to MV Calc, so skipping it won’t hurt you in the short term.

Unless you are some math wizz ready to tackle upper level math your second year, I really wouldn’t recommend you skipping college MV Calc. College math is different from HS math and will most likely make your high school MV Calc seem like a joke.

It depends on your major and what your goals are. If you are in BME, then I’d say skipping is fine. You probably will miss out on a few areas/topics but you really won’t need it. I know a few people who did that. It’s definitely a very small minority though. Not sure whether it is important for other majors.

One thing to watch out for though, is if you are in Pratt, your major may have a minimum number of math classes that you must take to satisfy graduation requirements (when I was at Duke, BME required at least 3 math classes I think) and AP credit does not count. It has to be a math class that you take at Duke. So if you skip out of MV, then you may end up having to take another math after DE to graduate. Again, this is Pratt specific I think.

I am in Pratt and am planning on majoring in either BME or ECE with a double major in something from Trinity most likely. Do engineering classes require some MC or no? I do enjoy math, so I might do the higher level math courses anyway. I was mainly wondering whether or not the lack of MC would hurt me during my years at Duke. Thanks Zonlicht and SBR!

You will use some concept of MV Calc 1-2 times for BME. If you have taken MV in HS, you’ll be fine.

BME actually requires very little math.

How about for ECE? And is MC a prereq for future math courses?

For ECE it depends on the electives, but for all engineers to graduate from Pratt you need Math 212 (103) MC, Math 216 (107) Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, and Math 353 (108) Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations. You also need to take Stat 130 (113). Almost all classes above MC have MC as a prerequisite or a course that needs MC as a prerequisite in the math department.
