Skipping Advanced Math/Pre-Calc/Trig and Going Straight to Calculus?

So I am a year behind the other kids in my class in math (long story). To catch up and take Calc before I graduate (I want to be an engineer), my guidance counselor offered to let me do this... should I? Would I be missing out on that much? Would I be lost in Calculus? If I do skip Trig, I am planning on self-studying it over the summer.

Any and all input is much appreciated :)

If you self-study, and are serious about it, you’ll be fine.

At my school they made us pass a final for any class we wanted to skip. If they aren’t making you do this at your school, still study it like they are.

well you had better self-study it well
I agree with Qwerty, most schools make you take a test to pass out of the class

Would you be going from Algebra II/Geomtry to Calc? Never having been in Calc, I can’t exactly say how difficult this would be; however, in my school we have two years of classes between these courses, so I feel like you would be missing a lot. Can you talk to your math teacher or the head of the math department about it? You could ask whether other people have done it and how well they ended up doing in Calc. I’m sure it’s possible if you’re willing to put the effort and time in, but whether it’s necessarily a good idea is debatable.

Nope I don’t have to pass a test. She’s just letting me skip.

I’ve had both geometry and Alg. II, so I’d be going from Alg. II to Calc.

Thanks for the responses guys. I forgot to mention that my sister did the same thing, and she got through Calc without problems.

^Ask her if she found anything particularly lacking in her preparation.

If you’re good at math, PreCalc and Trig are joke courses. Even Calculus.

Some of you are really lucky. My school rarely allows students to skip any classes.

Qwerty - Yeah I will, doubt she’ll remember though… she’s already out of college with her CPA :(

ryanxing - Definitely good to hear :)

I’d recommend self-study with aleks.com to make sure you’ve caught the bits you need, and then go for it! Many of the top engineering schools really want you to have taken calc in high school.

My mathy homeschooled son used aleks for almost all his high school math. It has a great assessment mode which allows you to see exactly what you need to know and just work on those parts, so it would be great for your purposes. PM me if you want more info! :D

My friend did this, as she moved and went to an international school where they didn’t offer precalc. She did AP Calc AB and said it was totally fine. I’d say go for it, self-study over the summer but don’t drive yourself crazy.

GeekMom - Thanks for the advice! Never heard of aleks. That’s exactly what I needed, though.

alwayshungry - Awesome. I think I’ll skip trig.

trig is a basic version of calculus… without trig you’d be completely and utterly lost.

I think if you’re willing to really dedicate yourself toward learning Trig over the summer, you should do it. I agree with the above poster, but self-studying Trig it is very do-able if you constantly practice and learn all the basic material. In my Alg. 2/Trig H class, we spent like 4/5ths of the year doing algebra 2 and the very last few weeks (3-4) learning about Trig and Pre-Calc, so I don’t need you need a full year class of Trig to succeed in Calc.

theblus… why do i get the feeling you’re ■■■■■■■■…

feedback - thanks for the input. so far the majority think i’d be fine if i skip.

You should definitely self study some pre calc. The majority of it is alg2, but there are still some stuff that’s not.
