In the short answer on the Yale supplement, it asks, "Why Yale?" in 500 characters or less. People are recommending picking a specific reason/think at Yale that appeals to me. Does anyone's know Yale's opinion on their secret society of the Skull & Bones? I would love to write about it, but don't want to put the admission officers off. Would they think I'm weird or would they be intrigued?

It is supposed to be secret. How can you write about it? If you say your goal is getitng in, then what if they would be concerned about your happiness at Yale if you don’t get in?

Its existence isn’t secret, and tap is public, so membership isn’t, either. What goes on at the meetings is the secret part.

I’d suggest some aspect you hope to enjoy all four years, not any of the senior societies. And something you know more about than merely “it exists,” which would preclude the senior societies as well.

Their rituals are secret, but their existence is well-known. I wouldn’t write about getting in, I would write about how I’m intrigued at all the secret societies and how they’ve managed to exist for so long while remaining secret. I’d talk about how I’m impressed at the level of community within the school that even secret societies have formed. I don’t know, maybe it was a bad idea.

Beccagadd, you practically read my mind about Skull and Bones! It is what got me interested in Yale at the very beginning.
Unless you are the type of person that the Skulls would tap, it wouldn’t make sense to write about secret societies.

They exist. The question is why are they the reason you would want to go to Yale.
