Slightly concerned

Ok, so this is my main concern. I'm currently a Junior, and fully intend on applying to ND EA next year, but I'm running into some concerns. This has probably been addressed a lot by other people, but I'm a liberal. Like a falling off the world left winger. I'm president of various political clubs on campus all of which I'd like to talk about in my app because they are so important to me. Yet, at the same time, I'm afraid to mention my political affiliation because ND is historically rather conservative. I am Catholic, so I suppose that's possibly working in my favor, but I'd really appreciate any advise thanks!!

even though i’m a devout reagan conservative haha if i were you i would go ahead and list every ec you have no matter if it’s for example “President of Young Democrats” or something like that…you should be fine just don’t use your app to rant about your beliefs. good luck i think you’ll be fine. im guessing there a large amount of liberals that apply to ND anyway b/c most young people today with political affiliations are probably liberal

No one will persecute you for being liberal at ND. There are indeed people just like you, living wonderful lives in South Bend, Indiana. Yes, you’re outnumbered. But you’re not alienated. And your political views will waver and change throughout the rest of high school and college. Your ambition is what they will look at on the application, not your political views. Make sure you don’t leave those Ec’s out, because they can help you.

Actually, St. Joseph county almost always goes democrat… you are not outnumbered in South Bend. You likely will be outnumbered on-campus, but not by much.

thanks! i feel a lot better now =D

also, while im on this thread already, is talking about a resurgence to religion a little cliche for ND app essay. I mean i don’t wanna have a sob story going on, but it kinda caused me to regain my Catholic faith. Is this a good or bad idea?

only if it demonstrates the characteristics and personality you currently have - make the aim of all of your essays to convey your personality and characteristics - if the essay does so, then you have achieved.

OK anyone that says that ND is more conservative than liberal is not a student or was a student a long time ago. In the mock election last year, Obama beat McCain by like 10 points. I’m a conservative and I have tons of conservative and liberal friends.

Also, the admissions staff doesn’t care about your political affiliation… unless you are President of the Young Communists or of Hitler’s Youth.

In my opinion, being able to describe what you have done with clarity and conviction is more important than what specific activities you list. You can still describe each activity in the app, right? Anyway, just try and paint a rough picture of yourself in that section and not an inflated caricature. That’s the job of the essay.
