Good news for New England:the Groton Sub Base and Portsmouth Naval Yard were both spared by the BRAC Commission. The economies of these two states(CT and NH) would have taken a big hit if they were forced to close.

Now let's keep our fingers crossed for Eielson AFB, Alaska, since its closure would mean the death of North Pole. I really don't understand how they figure moving a base in Alaska, where it gets to -60 degrees, to "warm base" status, can save money. That means they would move the troopies out and move in a smaller force to keep the infrastructure warm. Ha!

goofy

Thank you all for crossing your fingers! We are keeping Eielson! Yeah!

I'm a lot less concerned about the economy of CT than I am by the efficient use of our military resources. CT is our richest state - we need a far smaller sub force today than we did in previous years. Our military resources should be focused on defeating our enemies, not supporting pork barrel politics.

After reading about the interchange between the military leadership/planners and the BRAC Commission, I wonder how our current cadets will handle their future management/leadership positions in our military. It's got to be frustrating trying to balance the objective needs/goals of our military with the political goals/ambitions of our elected officials.

I'm not so naive to think our military doesn't have its own set of internal politics. But I agree with BigGreen that our military leadership should have greater latitude in the allocation of the resources afforded it by our citizens(remember its yours and mine money). If we intend to hold our military leadership accountable for its stated mission, then good management theory says we have to give it the authority to allocate its resources as it sees fit.

Serious topic, but I can't help this, aspen.

Did you mean "for your money and mine"? ;)

Nah, I think he meant "Yers and mine money". Thats the southern way to say it.

as an aside and on a "lighter note, a good friend of our daughter's rows for connecticut college just across the river from Groton...she is thrilled that it will be staying 'cause everytime the subs "leave" (they never are told when) but they always get a "last minute" reprieve from practice for the day...as they do when the subs return....and she just loves those "extra days" off!

Momsoftwins and Jamzmom: Be careful if you're fixin' to take on the role of "Grammar Police". It will likely be a full time job.

We really do have such short attention spans... What was this thread about? I can't seem to recall. Oh well. I'm fixin' to start a nuther thread anyways. We all seem to pick up on funny then run with it! I'm gonna try to control myself on this one.... Man, its tough :)

aspen,

I ain't never gonna be no grammar cop.

Actually I was playing with the 2009 motto: for your freedom and mine.

Jamzmom, You're right. The comedians (ennes) seem to be taking over quite a few threads. Now did I tell you the one about...
