It's natural for me to worry, but I am just concerned about my chances of getting into architecture schools, the top ones. I know I'm good, I just don't know how good I am compared to other people who get in.

I don't want to disclose my stats because I don't think that's too important here for architecture schools, but I know I've put in a ton of work into school so I ~feel good~ about my GPA, scores and extra-curriculars. I've lurked the forums and my stats match those of accepted people to some of my top choices.

So, I'm mainly interested in Rice, Cornell and Syracuse. I love all 3. I'd love to be able to pick from all three.

tl;dr My portfolio. I've got 14 pieces thus far, I'm finishing up 4-5 more so that I'll have a total near 20. This portfolio includes lots of observational drawings, portraits, a couple of works copied from photo (but I love them and they turned out really strong, one school told me to keep 'em), couple of landscape paintings, interior perspective and some figure drawings from a live model. I'm also going to do a collage, sculpture and also a balsa wood construction--which is what one school told me to do. I have been taking private art lessons for 8 yrs now, and have taken art in school.

SHOULD I BE /worried/ or not? I don't know how good the people are that are accepted to Rice/Cornell. I feel good about Syracuse. What do you guys think? I just want to not worry so much. What else should I include? Am I going crazy?

Haha, I appreciate any and all help.

Best.

Okay honestly 8 years private lessons? I’m sure your work is good.

If you wanted to, you could upload your portfolio and we could take a look at what you have.

Also: I currently attend Syracuse and the process is very holistic. Meaning they look at you as a whole (grades, test scores, portfolio, etc.)

You’re following the instructions of what the colleges want to see.

Think quality over quantity- better 1 great piece than 2 mediocre. And I’d always rather be a bit apprehensive rather than overconfident. It’s natural as it’s a strange new process that you feel is the most important in your life so far.

Once your application is in, put it in a mental box and to the side. Carry on working hard in your school classes and enjoying your senior year. You can’t do anything more and any anxiety is wasted energy.

The very worse that could happen is that you don’t get in to the school of your choice this year. You can reapply next year with an even more polished portfolio. One year is nothing. At an art school open day I attended, a professor told us that one student took 4 attempts before he got in. You wouldn’t see that as repeated failure but that he had the talent to get in plus the tenacity not to give up.

But I suspect you’re more than adequately prepared so just enjoy making your art :)

Thank you! Again, I’m not sure how experienced the accepted students are and what their work looks like. When I visited SU, I saw some portfolios and that did help for SU, but I don’t know about Rice or Cornell since those schools tend to be even more competitive.

I’d love to PM you my portfolio but I don’t have enough posts yet… haha

Thank you so much! I am a bit apprehensive and I totally agree that it’s better to be a bit apprehensive rather than overconfident. I am confident in my work, I’m just slightly nervous and scared haha.

I’m also definitely doing quality over quantity and I’ve been pacing myself so my work doesn’t look rushed or overworked, even. “It’s natural as it’s a strange new process that you feel is the most important in your life so far.” - well said.

That’s definitely the worst…and I don’t want that haha. I mean I know it doesn’t depend on what I want, but I’m hoping I get accepted to multiple schools I want.

Thank you so much though! I just started winter break so I’m ready to relax and make the last pieces for my portfolio.

I am in literally the same exact position as you. Except I’m not applying to Syracuse, and I haven’t taken 8 years of art lessons… So these next two weeks will really be a struggle to get something together for my portfolio ugh. Once you get enough posts to PM we should totally exchange advice on portfolio works haha!

@wimmiett

You should! Syracuse has an amazing program. And yeah that does suck. I think I have it easier since I have the formal training in art. BEST OF LUCK! I’ll try to get my post count up so that I can finally PM.

Why is there a 15 post requirement for the PMing
What to heck
???
How will 15 posts even verify you aren’t spam

Just go on the chances thread and tell a few people “all the ivys are reaches for anyone” until you reach 15

LMAO good suggestion. I’ll PM you in a bit after I get a few more posts.

@Paradises
If you want to pm your portfolio to me, you can, or if you need help designing a layout.

And it’s good you visited. The Arch Admissions department likes it when prospective students come to visit. If you came on one of the campus preview days you probably saw me (I was one of the Student Liaison Team students!)
