Slots at DIII Schools

Just to add/emphasize-

Amherst coaches in general must be very forthcoming-our S was told that the entire athletic program, with boys, girls and football had 45 “Slots”. Our son’s sport had 4 for men and women. Coach said our S wasn’t needed enough(based on his roster and our S’s event) to give a slot, but he would give him a “tip”, which means they tell admissions they would like the student, but can’t give any other weight to the application. He told my S he should (along with his 4.0 IB average, top 5%, team captain 2 years, 4 year varsity) retake the ACT(31) to be more competitive.

Williams coach strung my S along until the last minute for ED applications then either had a better prospect who didn’t get a likely letter, or the lack of 700s on my S’ achievement tests (all 600s) caused his “walk-thru” to result in a “probably won’t get in ED, please apply RD”

Midd coach did the walk-thru, said “you look great” and that is where is he now-but Midd requires only 1 set of standardized tests, so the aforementioned “non-competitive” SAT2s never had to surface.

Other schools recruited him heavily, but those were his top 3 choices.

If you’re going D3, insist on a “walk-thru” with admissions before you send in that ED application. Not everyone who gets recruited or invited for a visit gets admitted. There was a very sad Amherst football recruit on these boards last December.

jerseygirl…thanks for that post concering Middlebury’s rules concerning recruiting, but I can see how easily a coach could attend a game as long as there was some sort of “banquet” or “meeting” for him to speak at while he was there. I do plan on asking my son’s college counselor (who also happens to be his coach) about this. I really am wondering if there is some exception for private/prep schools.

Interesting re: the rule’s on Middlebury site…I have seen coaches from many NESCACS at my son’s prep school games…Hamilton, Bowdoin, Trinity, Colby, Amherst and all of them including Midd were at my son’s club team showcase over Labor Day

I do remember the one of said coaches holding an “admissions session” during the school day and then attending the game later that day
Also a few of the NESCAC coaches work in admissions

My son’s prep schools hosts over a hundred schools (maybe more) throughout the year, so maybe the coaches’ visits coincide with these visits to make them legal. Don’t know about club, though. We have seen many of the NESCAC’s at club outings as well (and they make no secret of it; they are listed as being in attendance on showcase websites).
