Trying to narrow the list for my son who attends a small, artsy (private) high school and would like a similar atmosphere. Decent grades - his school does not compute GPA but let's assume a B+ / A - average, and a very strong record of involvement and leadership in visual arts (animation and digital arts, painting, drawing, and 3D) as well as theater (improvisation, performance, voice, set design and lighting). Considering the following but wondering what schools are missing from this list. Also wondering what would be considered safety schools. Don't have SAT scores yet. We're more familiar with East Coast schools but happy to consider elsewhere, and also consider more urban settings. Thanks so much!

If that GPA is correct or stands, a B+/A-, many of the schools on your list would be reaches. If the SAT results are strong, that could help but you should add some match or saftey schools. Muhlenberg is a very good school that could be a match. If your sons GPA improves and he has strong SAT results, Skidmore and Kenyon are excellent schools that could be within reach. Oberlin, Swarthmore, Carleton and Wesleyan might be super reaches.

Good luck in your search, there will be plenty of great options.

Sarah Lawrence fits right in with your “definitely” list. Your “considering” list would be reaches unless his SATs turn out really well. For safeties you might try Alfred, Adelphi, Allegheny, Goucher, Ithaca, and Wheaton. Also, look into Franklin and Marshall, Muhlenberg, and Elon; Purchase if you live in New York.

Thank you all - these are very helpful suggestions. He’s a junior and working hard this year to have strong grades. If SSAT results are any guide (taken in 8th grade for HS), his SAT scores should be pretty strong.

Agree with Sarah Lawrence, and very appreciative of the safety suggestions. Will look at the new schools suggested. Thank you for taking the time to respond!

I don’t think Vassar is any harder to get into than Carlton and I think of it as being more or an art and theater place, so you might want to consider it. You sometimes hear that it’s a little easier for boys than girls to get in, but I don’t know if that’s really right. Bard has an unusual early application process you might want to look into. (Something about attending a class and getting a response very soon thereafter). Maybe he should visit before next September so he knows if he wants to try that.

My son was interested in many of the schools on your list, especially Wesleyan, Kenyon and Skidmore. He gradutated from Williams with a degree in art and art history and was very pleased with the department and the arts community. Small but vibrant theater program as well.

In the reach category, I’d substitute Williams for Swarthmore. Swarthmore is an excellent school but not especially arts focused.

Some other less selective choices: Hamilton, Conn College, Haverford.

I do not have feedback on all of the suggested schools…

However, unless he is looking for an auditioned BFA Theatre program, I would probably not consider Ithaca, Purcahse, or Elon… all of these schools have very strong BFA Acting programs, and most (if not all of the) performance opportunities will go to the BFA students. Students in BFA programs are often asked to specialize in terms of area… “acting,” “design/ technology,” etc…

Agree that in addition to your “definitely” list you might want to look at Goucher, Muhlenberg, Vassar, Sarah Lawrence.

If you are interested in auditioned BA programs you may also want to look at SUNY New Paltz.

It is a bigger school, but if you are also looking at auditioned theatre programs you might want to check out Boston University./ They offer a BFA in Theatre Arts.

Suggest that you might also post this question on the Theatre & Drama Major and the Visual Arts majors forums.

Is Emerson College on the radar or is Downtown Boston too urban? Small school, artsy, just a bit on the far side of quirky,Theater and Drama programs appear top notch. I’m pretty sure their cinematography is strong, Visual and Media Arts is very good.

Another hidden gem is Trinity University is San Antonio, TX. Urban, ~2500 UG, awards general merit as well as scholarships in art. Less expensive, very pretty campus.

Also active theater and scholarships for that ,as well.

FYI - Emerson’s BA and BFA programs are auditioned programs. If you plan on having a few auditioned programs on your list, I agree it may fit your criteria.

LOL! We live very close to Boston and this is the kind of kid who would have moved out in 6th grade if I had let him! Many great schools in the area but I think he wants to get away from home a bit more. Or maybe I just want him to be further away…
