Small to Medium sized colleges in NJ/PA/NY

Even at many SAT optional schools you need to submit test scores if you want to be considered for merit aid.

OK. Don’t despair. If she can get to 1500, she’ll have many options. But, even at 1300, there are possibilities. Perhaps…

Shippensburg
Kutztown
East Stroudsburg

If she expands her radius beyond NY NJ PA, there will be more schools.

You also might want to consider having her take the ACT. It’s different from the SAT and some kids do better with it. My son did. Good luck.

Thanks so much for your help. I am really stressing over this. She really want to go to UDEL but I don’t think it’s going to happen based on her scores even though she excels in other areas, (SS Honors, tons of EC, Peer Leadership, etc.)

We’re thinking of looking tinto east Stroudsberg but she really wants UDEL. I also plan on signing her up for the ACT. Thanks for the suggestion, I’ve heard it’s somewhat easier than the SAT although she’s got to get over that “test anxiety” syndrome that’s the major issue right now.

I am not sure UDEL is worth the extra dollars for an OOS student.

UDEL is expensive and I know not to count on merit aid at this time, just trying to determine if they’ll even consider her with these scores.

Cathyjets - If she really wants UDel, her best bet will be to start somewhere else and transfer to Delaware. Can you give me your opinion on East Stroudsburg and other schools you’ve visited in PA. You can answer on this thread or PM me.

I haven’t visited any other schools in PA yet, going to West Chester and possible East Stroudsberg. I’ll let you know how I make out.

cathyjets - Has she tried taking the ACTs?

We are looking into taking the ACT in June although I’m told that scores are pretty similiar to SAT scores with the ACT but we’re optimistic anyway.

I’ve heard people talk about the University of Scranton. Fairleigh Dickinson is pretty reasonable. Ramapo. Drew? Cabrini College near Philly. Other Catholic schools? Felician gives scholarships even for pretty low scores. Montclair State.

Definitely take the ACT. Scores are equivalent for SOME students–and for other students, the difference can be an equivalent 200-300 points.

I agree. Son’s 2-part SAT was 1180. His ACT was 29, which is equivalent to an SAT 1300.

I’m a little confused by this thread. University of Delaware has over 20,000 students, so the small LAC’s being suggested are giong to be quite a different atmosphere. If you are looking for a smaller college, I’d suggest you look at Arcadia University outside Philadelphia, Albright College in Reading, Elizabethtown College and Lebanaon Valley College in central PA and Hood College in Frederick, MD, if it is not too far for you. All give merit aid and seem to be good schools with the majors you are looking for. You can probably waive SAT’s at all these schools as well if you want to. I’m less familiar with larger schools but you may want to look at Drexel and Temple?

Thanks so much for everyone’s help & assistance. We are definitely going to take the ACT and hope for the best. I’ll also look into the schools suggested. Our objective is small to medium sized schools, thus why we like UDEL but I’m definitely going to take a hard look at the suggestions here. MANY THANKS

Some good suggestions here. My concern would be to put your daughter into a school which she might find to be a bit overwhelming, academically speaking. That would be heartbreaking for her and you. That said, I can’t imagine that UDEL would not have a program that she could feel comfortable in.

Okay, I’m going to be the guy who says this, but if your daughter is a looker, have her do an interview at UDEL (they offer off-campus interviews as well). Just make sure the interviewer is a guy. He may decide your daughter has ‘intangibles’ that may benefit the school much as a traffic cop decides to let a pretty girl go without a ticket. There, I said it.

ctyankee – Are you saying that this is a criteria specific to UDEL? I’ve never heard anything before that would suggest that UDEL looks at that sort of “intangible” when evaluating candidates for admission.

No. Not specific to UDEL, at all. What I am saying is that guys will be guys.

Unless she applies to SAT optional scores or raises her SAT score significantly, almost every school mentioned in this thread will not be doable. Many students go the community college route, and after a certain number of credits, she will not need to submit an SAT score.

puttin’ it out there, Asher Roth went to West Chester U, he’s turned out pretty good.
