I need recommendations for a decent video/sound recorder. Prefer small and easy to upload/ burn- for auditions. Have the older "tape" type but this takes HOURS to upload and edit. Have a sound only zoom already and love it.

and you’ll get other options and discussions too

Having read all the info on the forum, D3 ended up with a Zoom H2 this year. She’s found it easy to operate - still trying to get into the habit of remembering to bring it with her for every performance. (We missed a great taping opportunity last week, darn it!) This place is a wealth of information - thanks, everybody!

Oh - sorry - I just re-read OP’s question and see that you already have the audio zoom, and that you specifically want video. In that case, look at the Q3HD - and be sure to report back to us!

I’d be interested on any feedback on the video quality of the Q3 vs the Q3HD. I remember reading that the video quality was not great on the original model, has the HD model improved on that?

another thing I wonder about, and perhaps a music engineering kid or parent will pipe in…

Don’t some of the schools have the equipment - sometimes even built into a recital hall - that the kids can use for preparing audition cds?

And, at schools with engineering students, can those kids be enlisted or paid to do the recordings for the instrumentalists?

I had the Q3 and now have the Q3HD. The latter one’s video is much better, and I’m quite happy with it. They both have great audio. Q3HD is a bit more compact size as well. I also suggest getting a 32 gb disk to go with it, as the HD video takes up more space (it comes with a smaller size one that won’t hold much if you select the best quality video).

Thanks everyone- tried to do a search but most posts are regarding the recorders not video- AND technology changes quickly!
I will try the Q3HD- jazz/shreddermon :)

We also got the Q3HD and and are happy with it. S used it for auditions and was very pleased with the results. We have also recorded a recital, and both the sound and video quality are great.

The Q3HD is a nice unit, it has really good audio recording capability and the microphone setup is really, really good. With the settings set to highest resolution on the video and sample rate on the audio, it does a really nice job. Also supports HDMI output, which means you can feed it into a digital flat panel tv or monitor that supports HDMI.

I agree, if you get one, pick up a 32 gig sd card for it,with a 2gig card if you set it to the highest levels it has very little record time:)

I love my Flip for recording recitals and other performances. It has HD and an omni-directional mic. Plus it is easy to upload to YouTube. However I’m not sure I’d use it for prescreens. We did ours professionally.

The only problem with the FLIP is that it devours AA batteries and you can’t plug it in. The quality is great but when the battery dies, you better hope you aren’t in the middle of recording.

I have a flip HD as well, but the difference in sound quality between a flip and a Zoom is HUGE. If you’re recording music, there is simply no comparison. Google or search youtube for some examples, and listen a computer with decent speakers - you’ll see.

My flip is rechargeable. Love the pic on my flip but as posted, sound is horrible. Everybody sounds out of tune. Best for family videos!

Thank you jazz/shreddermom and others who gave specific feedback about the Q3HD. There are many interesting examples on YouTube but first hand feedback is very helpful.
