Smaller company vs Bigger company?

It varies tremendously between companies. Some companies will arrange housing and transportation and will pay you an additional living stipend. Other companies will pay you a flat salary and will expect you to take care of everything yourself - this has been the norm in my experience. Some will pay you only a nominal salary (if anything) insufficient to pay for housing OR travel, counting on some students’ desperate need for experience to draw them in to a bad financial arrangement.

So ask the company. It it perfectly acceptable to wait until they actually offer you the internship but ask before accepting.

Does research matter at all to a big company when applying for an internship?

Straight out of school is the time to learn because you don’t know much. Go with a company that will provide the best learning environment (likely a larger company) for your first 3ish years and then you can think about taking risks.
