Loved Peter and the Starcatcher! So did everyone in the audience (at that’s how it seemed). Yes, some self-referential humor, but very obvious and didn’t need to be a theater insider to get it. It does move at breakneck speed, and a few times I missed a line, but really, the plot is pretty clear even if a few minor details are lost.

Such a creative show on all fronts. If anyone goes, take binoculars (as I did) and really scan the proscenium.

An interesting point: instead of a choreographer, the playbill listed “movement” for the person who did this.

Peter and the Starcatcher is definitely a show I hope to see again, as I agree the pace is breakneck and you can’t catch nearly everything the first time. I’d love to have seen the work that went in to creating it.

Wasn’t Christian Borle hysterical?

We watched the final episode last night and were SO bummed with Marylin choice. I would pay real money to see Megan Hilty sing that final song as she would ACTUALLY be electrifying! I had to laugh aloud when the director told Ivy that Karen had that “something” and she didn’t. Hah!!

MomCares - I’m right there with you on the choice for Marilyn. I have paid money to see Megan Hilty sing.

I have also seen Katherine McPhee sing in person. Four years ago my H and I went to a taping of American Idol and she was the guest singing on that show. They actually taped her performance prior to the live show and inserted it into the program. I didn’t think there was anything special about her singing.

@showmom858 - great to know it’s not just me. ;-D

Anyone have plot ideas for next year?

I think it’s not too late to have Karen stolen away to play Eliza Doolittle as was suggested earlier, a role for which she might actually be slightly better suited. Then the director could be treated for a sex addiction, realize he’s actually gay, and fall in love with Karen’s ex fiance so he can stay on the show?

I’m one of the few people who didn’t enjoy Peter and the Starcatcher. I found the plot very confusing, and most of the time I didn’t know what was going on. I just never could lose myself in the story. I was always aware I was watching a play. The magic eluded me. The performances were great, though, Celia Keenan-Bolger and Christian Borle in particular, and it was a thrill for a Smash fan like me to see him live.

I loved Megan Hilty’s recent outing, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, at City Center Encores. It’s a piece of fluff but very enjoyable, and she and Rachel York were terrific. Choreography was just great too, spellbinding. And to hear (and see) a full orchestra and wonderfully written vocal parts was a thrill. I wish the show had run an extra week.

I felt that way at the beginning, too, but as I relaxed and went with the flow I found myself very involved and laughing harder than I have in a long time. We all liked the second act better than the first, once most of the exposition was finished.

SO jealous!! Does anyone know if it was filmed?

Ha! I’m thinking the fact that I’m a terrible writer might become a problem. On the other hand, maybe I’d fit right in (Die vampire, die!!)? ;-D

I am very curious about the creative development of Peter. The book writer must have known about the visual elements, in terms of scenery / props and movement, as he was writing it, don’t you think? I wonder whose vision determined this aesthetic?

One of the things that added to the appeal of gentleman prefer blondes for me was that it was a concert staging and with minimal production values the performances themselves were the focus. It reminded me of South Pacific with a lush orchestra and simple sets, although the latter was given fuller production.

A non-musical theatre professional here: I really enjoyed the Smash finale and loved the choice for Marilyn. I also think Katherine McPhee’s voice is just fine. Not a great singer myself, so who am I to critique HER voice any way? :)

My favorite thing about Smash is when they show group numbers from the show with choreography—I just think that is exciting. I also really enjoyed the dream sequence/“Bollywood” number!

My least favorite thing has been a lot of the over-the-top soap-opera writing (the teenage boy has lines that make me want to scream).

I agree, it’s just fine, but the show is using all of it’s star-making machinery (including electronic voice enhancement) to sell the idea that she’s extraordinary. Knowing so many truly extraordinary MT performers, I’m unconvinced. Then again, I suspect that MT moms are not the target market. ;-D

Agreed… it looked like everyone was having so much fun!

Totally agree, though that seems to have gotten better over the season. In any case, I suspect that the writers haven’t spent time with any teenage boys we know (hah)!

I’ve never been a TV person, but Sutton Foster on Bunheads? Color me happy!!

To quote her Twitter "Jack Nix @thatbroadwayguy

I took that as a DVD since she said they are recording a “Live” performance and that there would be limited “copies” if it was just the music I don’t think she’d say “Limited copies” since the music can be in CD form and or iTunes etc.

My guess is that the recording is just vocals. The specific reference to a “LIVE” performance would be because cast recordings are not done “LIVE”, they’re recorded in a studio. If it were to be a DVD, she would likely have referred to it as being filmed not recorded.

Hmm Idk I always say “record” when referring to a video, may be a Florida thing, lol, well I hope it’s a DVD a la “Candide” but music would be great too!

At least 4 characters won’t be back next season (Dev, Annoying Assistant, Brian d’Arcy James and Joe Dimaggio guy), which in the case of this show might be a very good thing.

I loved it. If you were ever a Gilmore Girls fan, I can almost guarantee you will also love it!
About the teenage boy: he is indeed awful. But I must also point out that some of the lines he is given are ridiculous (“are you going to get my sister?” or something like that…seriously??)
