Smash

Is anyone planning to watch the Smash premier?

One of D's voice teachers' students is a lead, as is a Northwestern graduate.

We rarely watch TV, but do love the recent emergence of MT talents (including songwriters) getting TV work, so I hope the show does well and creates LOTS of new jobs for years to come. ;-D

If you watch it, let us know what you think!

Reviews have been amazing…even NYTimes…

Will be watching…

I RARELY watch television but plan to catch Smash.

Ok… stupid question… is it tonight?

cant’ wait!.. tonight @ 10E/9C

@lojosmo - Thanks! Now I’ll go track down the local NBC affiliate and will plan to watch tonight.

I’m hopeful that it will be better than Glee.

We’ve mostly enjoyed Glee, but they say Smash will be quite different. I’ve heard it described as The West Wing on Broadway… apparently far less pop than Glee, mostly original music, and no musical-type random bursting into song (which I assume most of us MT fans enjoy but perhaps not everyone does).

I just realized it’s on at 10:00 here… past our bedtime so we may have to figure out how to watch it on the internet later in the week. If anyone figures out how to do that I’d love to hear (maybe Hulu or NBC website).

You can get the first episode for free on I-Tunes. And yes, it’s going to be way better than Glee, I think! I’ve seen the first episode already, and plan to watch it again tonight.

I have a lot of hope for Smash! I enjoyed the first episode but we’ll have to see how the season goes…although I hear Bernadette Peters is going to play Ivy’s mother!?

Let’s Vote.
I’m on Team Ivy.

Does anyone know how to get the pilot of Smash free on I-tunes… do you need a special code or something? All we could see was a free 7-minute sneak peek.

I just watched it and thought it was well done.

One thing did make me wonder (as a parent with a kid in the biz)…but if you watched it…the part where Katherine McPhee’s character is called to come over the director’s house at 10 PM at the last minute (isn’t that unusual for someone auditioning to be asked to do???) and also it was obvious he was making the moves on her (that still happens??? yikes). How realistic was all that? The rest of the show seemed to be quite realistic and maybe this part is too and I’m just naive???

PS…I don’t watch Glee! :p

Based on episode #1, I’m on team Ivy, but I know that the writer’s will paint her as an antagonist, so we’ll see.

OK, if we’re gonna vote…I will vote for McPhee’s character (I forget her name) because she is like the underdog with a much less developed resume and she also does not have blond hair and so would be less “expected.”

PS…I made an assumption (not sure I am right?) that the “vote” is about who we THINK will get cast and not necessarily who we WANT to get cast.

One more comment…I liked the scene in the restaurant with McPhee, her BF, and her parents and how the parents thought she was merely a waitress with unrealistic dreams (for musical theater) and her BF says something really great about how he liked how she went after her dreams (he said it better than that but I forget how he put it).

I am voting based on who I WANT to get cast. I reserve the right to change my mind after watching more episodes :).

Loved the comments about Michael Riedel. Very funny!

As with most pilots, they jammed this one full of story, backstory, and ‘stuff’. Eventually, that should settle into more of a focus on the arc of the story and they can flesh out the rest at a more leisurely pace.

I enjoyed Christian Borle, and Deborah Messing, too. The off-camera drama is likely to influence a lot of potential fans of the show so it will be interesting to see how that all plays out. Theatre fans have a tendency to inject themselves, to a greater degree, into the shows they love, or hate, for that matter. I’m not sure what demographic they’re hoping for with this show.

I vote Karen

Ivy. She’s earned it.
And yes, Soozievt, I sure hope that casting couch moment was a throw-back! (MT fans are a hopeful bunch, aren’t we?)
