SMFA and Tufts

Hi everyone, I was just wondering how easy it is for Tufts students to take art courses at SMFA (without doing the dual degree). Do a lot of people do it? How is Tufts' art program in general? Thank you! :)

If by art, you mean studio art, then Tufts has a very highly regarded program, particularly in drawing and painting. The SMFA teaches some of their studio art courses on the Tufts campus – so you do not have to leave the campus to take “SMFA courses”. In terms of scheduling/enrollment , the on-campus courses are similar to other Tufts courses, with the exception that they tend to be taught in a single time block (about 3 hours) each week, in the afternoons or evenings. This can be tricky to schedule if you have a major that requires lots of lab courses (engineering), or other commitments that require large contiguous blocks of time (some work-study jobs, internships, etc.), but it is usually not a problem.

My daughter took an on-campus painting course and loved it. For her, it was relaxing - despite the time commitment. She also visits the MFA multiple times per semester for entertainment (admission is free for Tufts students).

The SMFA allows Tufts students to enroll in classes taught at their downtown location as well. This is a bigger time commitment in that it requires about a 40min commute, but it makes a wider assortment of courses available. A regular shuttle bus is provided. My daughter has an eye on one of these courses, but has not taken it yet. This option is less common and tends to draw the more committed art students. The time commitment is manageable, (less than a downtown internship), but using the bus time for studying is recommended.

Here is some information including on and off campus course listings for next semester and the bus schedule.

The Tufts culture is great for students with a creative streak. Good luck

Some of my friends took a guitar making class at the SMFA and managed to do the commute (and had a pretty good time)

Thanks, that info is so helpful!! I loved Tufts when I visited but I was wondering about this! Hearing that definitely keeps it high on my list :)

My son took a jewelry making course at the SMFA freshman year. It met on Saturday morning so commuting wasn’t a big issue, though he didn’t fully appreciate that he might prefer sleeping in. He felt he didn’t get enough feedback on the grading - he thought he was doing fine and got a lower grade than he expected. I saw what he produced and thought the grade was more than fair, but they certainly could have communicated to him better.
