Please do not misconstrue my statements. Where did I say the retention rate absolves Smith for allowing (they don’t) despicable behavior or “you can always transfer”?
When evaluating top tier colleges, the retention rate is an excellent indicator of student satisfaction with their college environment. Smith’s retention rate is extraordinarily high. It’s not much below that of Amherst and Williams. Acknowledging that fact, it’s reasonable to extrapolate persecution is not an issue. Was it, students would be exiting en mass, especially considering ~ 40% of the students do not receive financial aid and can afford to “walk.”
Additionally, if there was any veracity to the accusations presented in this thread, I suspect the highly vocal and reactionary Smith and NoHo community would have staged protests and/or marched down Elm St. to the president’s house.
Smith does not tolerate discrimination because of sexual orientation or otherwise. When in the rare instance a woman does exhibit egregious behavior, she is, as has happened, expelled.
Anyone read the novel “Commencement”? It took place at Smith and I imagine was an accurate portrayal of the school since the author attended.
