Can someone tell me what the colors are at Smith? I've read that the color (s) is white. But then I read another story and it says they are blue and gold. I know this is not one of those questions that will get everyone arguing, but I'm curious. Plus, there has been enough arguing on this site for the next year. Also, I vivited Daily Jolt for my daily laugh, and looked at the pictures section. Why do the girls dress up like hookers for convocation? Bras and underwear everywhere, posing outside. I'm a bit confused. Isn't convocation supposed to be a ceremony celebrating the beginning of the school year? And if this is Smith's idea of doing so, when did that "fashion trend" begin? Just curious, because I find it kind of funny and a little weird!

Yes, the Smith colors are blue and gold, at least judging from my daughter's team "uniform."

From what I understand, Convocation at Smith is basically a Mardi Gras-like occasion -- a time for the students to express themselves as outrageously as they wish before settling down to serious business. The "dress code" is anything goes, and ranges from the clothing-challenged to the morbidly memorialistic (Lawrence residents go in black in honor of fellow Lawrentian Sylvia Plath). I don't know the history behind the tradition, though.

I have no idea when convocation became the way it is, but it's been for at least the last ten years. Each house has a theme. Some have the same theme each year (Lawrence is black, my house is bras and jeans) but others change theirs. Also, some students wear less than others.

From how I understand the colors, the official one is white but the sports teams add blue and gold to the uniforms.

Thanks Pesto and Borgin,

I really didn't understand the bra and jeans thing; but if you say it's more like mardi gras, then hey, go for it! I like the idea of letting go before getting down to serious studying, so I have no issue with it. I just found it curious as to why everyone was half dressed; and some less so!!!! The school colors are nice, just that everyone tells me the Smith color is White. (which btw is not a color). Anyway, I digress! Can you tell me more about the tendencies of each house for convocation? Are the quad houses a little wilder? I don't know much about the location of the houses yet.

RLT: it's been quite a while since I've skied but I've been going downhill for years.

Ah...yeah, your post #336 made me think you had a significant problem.

Ahhh convocation, my outfit consisted of Saran wrap. and just that.

Sara, wasn't that kinda sorta hot/sweaty? lol

Just saran wrap? And you didn't invite me? Now that's what I call an interesting outfit. What house are you from, and what do other houses do?

My d's house colors are green and purple, and they dress up as pirates.

This conversation is great fun. Can you also name the houses and the differences between them for convocation?

{{Yes, the Smith colors are blue and gold}}}

The colors are for the teams,not Smith per se.
Each class has its own color.

{{Ah...yeah, your post #336 made me think you had a significant problem}}

The post did sound harsher than I intended and not SNL satirical funny. Does being up very late /AND/ earlier last evening had to endure a marathon shopping trip with the wife and kids count as an excuse?
No, I dont have a problem if it isnt abused. My daughter is at Holyoke and Amherst on occasion, so Im sure she has had a free nibble now and then.
This could trun into a very interesting philosophical argument however. Why is it ok to give a visiting friend from high school a free meal, but its not ok to sample the food on the salad and hot food bars at the Whole Foods market on rt #9 ? :)

{but its not ok to sample the food on the salad and hot food bars at the Whole Foods market on rt #9 ? }

It's NOT?!?!?!? By the time I make it to the end of the salad bar, I've already had a small one! LOL

Thanks RLT...interesting about the class colors, I hadn't seen nor heard that before. Does each class do something special throughout the year using their class color?

{{Does each class do something special throughout the year using their class color?}}

Not really. If you were to poll the students, I bet half wouldnt know their class color.

I think class tshirts (which are sold the summer prior to coming to Smith as a first year) are done by class color (at least, mine was).

Also, at reunion the worker tshirts are done in the color of the graduating class. The alums coming for reunion also wear ribbons in their class color when they march in the parade. I have a feeling it becomes a more known thing after one graduates from Smith.

Yeah, the saran wrap was pretty sweaty. Kinda fun though...

Anyways, I know one house dresses up like bunnies (more like the playboy type than the fuzzy, fully covered animal), one house does pirates, umm baldwin I think was like purple and green. check out the jolt pictures, there are some convocation ones there...

but beware, some are a little inapprop.

I have a question about housing notification. When do we find out where we live? Someone told me we would get an email???

in Mid-July through snail mail along with your roommate's name and personal home address :)

tmp, supercow is a spring transfer.

I'd imagine that yes, it'd be by email because new students arrive next week and it's not a lot of time between now and then. I'm also going to assume that it'll be soon (probably by the end of the week, but I don't work in housing so I can't promise anything).
